clatter clatter....could it be.....
sorry I've not managed to investigate it yet but just wondering if my clatter could be......

was 11pm last night when curiosity got the better of me and I decided to give the front wheels a good shake (as you do when it's dark and raining late on a Sunday evening)

any how the front o/s was most noticeable - a clank clank (also on the n/s but perhaps less so). so just to reiterate by grabbing the top of the tyre and effectively pushing / pulling horizontally in / out of the wheel arch I got a clanking noise. bearing in mind I'm no 6'6" 20 stone giant is this normal? and could it be related to the intermittent clattering I get when driving?

when I get someone brave enough to lie underneath while I have another go and determine where the noise it coming from I'll let you know Very Happy

my first guess would be the back plate on the discs but it is just that (a guess).

- oh and happy Easter week all Thumbs Up

If it is the back plate/stone guard on the disc, just take it off & bin it.They are more trouble than they are worth.
Another thing to check would be the steering ball joints.Checkall 4.

Can you get someone to stand on the brakes while you try it ?

Can you feel movement in the wheel/tyre or is it just a noise ?

Do you get the same noise if you move the steering wheel from side to side ?

Have you jacked the wheel up to try this or just done it while it's sat on the ground ? http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

thanks guys.

not tried anything yet - just tried it while on four wheels.

thanks for suggestions - will have a look tonight and try as suggested above.

it's probably nothing more than the new tyres (although not convince hence mentioning it here) but it seems to be understeering more than ever - could just be I'm driving a little quicker of course?

unfortunately the intermittent clatter goes on.

the handbrake if nothing has resolved the vibration at 52mph - or at least I think it has.......it's wearing me out this clatter and search for 'perfection'.

I feel like I'm searching for the impossible and yet all I want is for the damn thing to work like it does some of the time all of the time (is that so impossible?)

Confused

Might be your swivel pins wearing.

I had a clack clack coming from the front which turned out to be the swivels.

Might be muddying the water but worth a check Thumbs Up Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Munch90 - I have but unfortunately it's never helped much.

Shaggydog - I need to do a search and find out what the swivel pins are - could they affect handling?

Done some very quick checks in the rain just now - pretty sure it's nothing to do with the steering. Moving it left right no knocking. Rocking o/s wheel in/ out at 12 o clock causes knocking but not at 3 or 9 o'clock position and it's only o/s. Seems to be coming from the centre / Hub.?
