So we're agreed something ain't right. Problem being BW nothing appears to be moving and it sounds like it's coming from the diff as mad as that might sound? I've noticed it before and remarkably it was very prominent tonight on my drive home - seems like the power steering is intermittent and steering going very heavy on n off yet I'm sure that the power steering is fine. Also when slowing down not only does it sound like the hand brake is binding (which I'm sure it isn't ) but there is also a feeling in the steering which I can't quite describe but certainly doesn't seem right to me...a bit like it's tram lining but I'm sure it's not that as such? Hopefully have axle replaced in the next couple weeks before my hols. And just to be on the safe side doing the rear diff too. Give it a few more years and perhaps a g wagon amg might have been a cheaper option |

Replacing axle isnt going to fix that , its something bolted to the axle , and making that amount of noise it would be easy to find
if its side to side its got to be to do with panard rod or panard moulting , the noise sounds to metal to metal to be internal in the axle |

Munch90 on this one occasion I'm afraid I have to disagree.
About 5 people have had a look at it now and all the obvious stuff has been dismissed ie mud plates, brake pads, track / steering rods, pan hard etc. It definitely 'seems' to be coming from within the casing? Perhaps this is the year it gets fixed once and for all. Once the axle and rear diff are replaced it doesn't leave too much having had new turbo, g box, extension shaft, clutch....... |

Nothing moves inside the axle side to side , only top and bottom swivels could give a a knock and that recording i would say is not them
and none of the 5 people could pin point that noise? |

It's a mystery. No, one as of yet has a clue as to where / what is causing it?
Oh also seem to get weird break sensation but no noise...its feels like the hand brake is on..like there's a brake being applied to the engine....like I say weird? Last edited by Caterham on 14th Jul 2015 6:51pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Ther sounded to be more noise from the drivers swivel/wheel area than the diff on the vid you put up. Ray

By the sound of the recording you should be albe to feel that noise by moving your hand around all the joints etc
or take it to mot station and get them to check that use a atl ramp with shaker plates |

Munch90 - hopefully another couple of weeks and there'll be a new axle there anyway so if its the axle then that'll sort it. if it's a suspension component then hopefully it'll come to light during the swap over along with the shocks getting swopped over
either way hopefully a couple more weeks and the mistery will be solved. as mentioned above the with the strange goings on with the braking, steering, and gear changes I firmly believe it's something (and I've no idea how) to do with the diff or CV / drive shaft.?? I still have issues along the lines of heavy vibration which can be felt through the floor and gearbox intermittently like you're on a bad road surface oh and the poor gear changes.....could be the clutch master cylinder so that's up for replacement too ...... In hindsight I wonder whether bailing out Greece might have been cheaper |

I can't remember if we established if you had a 2 or 4 gear diff? If you have a 2 gear diff and it's breaking up you'll get all manner of wierd effects.

A little more food for thought. I doesn't do it (or at least its hugely reduced) if the wheels are on either - only when straight forward. so to my mind that must rule out suspension / panard rod.
but if it's interal to the axle casing I'm not sure how that would impact on that ...? all that said I presume IF it is something to do with the diff it's remotely possible that the output shaft to the diff could stop rotating while driving which could give the sensation of the running gear having stopped rotating and hence a terrible shunt when changing gear? reminds me of Scooby doo |
