Front swivels / bushes.
Holes in axle for above are oval! Could the axle being slightly out of alignment cause issues with' gear changes / perceived poor take up on clutch? |

after replacing front axle and trailing arms (if that's the right word?) the knocking noise has gone.
however after doing about 1900 miles on mostly minor roads from Bilbao back up to Calais driving through the day and night for hours on end but never pushing it too hard and never through exceptionally hot temps it seems obvious to me that gear changes are an issue as before but this seems to only be the case when having been running for along time ie I would imagine the gearbox is hot. for example after driving pretty much non stop for 5 hours I changed gear slowing down for an island and it was an almighty clonk out of gear to neutral and clonk into gear. more like the sound you'd getting going from hi to lo. not the grinding sound you'd get if you didn't depress the clutch enough. also the following which I'm sure relate either to the gearbox or transfer box. I get vibrating which I can feel through the floor most noticeable at 1750-1780 rpm in 6th and also 5th so it's not road speed related and finally the sound of clattering (sounds like injector knock) which I believe is gearbox. if I'm coasting in gear down hill sweet as can be but give the engine just the slightest throttle input and clatter (you'd assume engine as I have for a long time but I'm wondering if some how it's some kind of shaft that's that's rattling? any thoughts would be much appreciated (and no I'm not selling it! ) |

So back to page 5 on this thread and my dodgy radius arms. Is it fairly normal with very light use the bushes should be shot after about 55k miles.
IF the engine mounts were shagged could this in anyway reduce the life of said bushes through vibration that should be captured by engine mounts? |

sorted.
it just needed a new rear diff c/w ATB, new transfer box with ATB, new friction plate, new clutch slave cylinder and new gearbox. there now appears to be NO backlash. there's a much lighter feel to the clutch pedal with progressive take up. when reversing depressing the clutch doesn't make it feel like the tyres are hexagons either. in a nut shell it's a really nice truck to drive that should have left the factory like this.......it's taken a mere 6.5 years and 92k miles to sort. 3 gearboxes, 2 turbos, 2 ECM, 3 tranferboxes, 2 rear diffs, 2 front axles........and £s. BUT I feel like I'm ready to tacke the next 100k miles, NO PROBLEM. a few other little tweeks have been done and I feel like I'm ready to improve on my 40mpg (617 miles on a tank) |

no way.
you would not believe how well it's going at the moment. (apart from the a/c - but that's just a wee niggle). with all the new bits there appears to be NO slack in the transmission. you take your foot off the gas and no slack it just engine brakes as it should. acceleration is brill. I'm absolutely amazed how not getting the diff lock fully disengaged can impact on so many things incl what seems like big slop in the transmission to clatter on light acceleration and not surprisingly strange handling / steering etc. |

More investigation reveals the metal tear drop shaped plate that bolts to transfer box diff lock mech should bend upwards slightly.....mine bends downwards.
Not sure yet if this is critical but prior to making some changes yesterday the mech wasn't moving fully into the straight ahead (12 o'clock) position and as such the mechs inside were rattling and catching. Hopefully i'll get the chance to verify this tomorrow. |
