thanks Ian. I believe they were looked at briefly and dismissed - done 55k miles so hopefully they should be fine?
back to my previous question - I presume there shouldn't be any knocking what so ever? |

Def was up in the air last night...but before that we noted there was no knocking on full r/h lock.
Up in the air it was difficult to replicate knocking - moving the wheels into full lock positions appeared to replicate knocking. Front drive flanges have worn causing play in shafts and my defender wizard feels there is something not right with axle internals but unfortunately we ran out of time to investigate further Will keep you posted. |

Do you have a two-gear or four-gear front diff?

Got a bad memory so can't really for sure but seem to recall having a look through the fill hole and thinking it's a 4 pin - but can't recall why I think that?
It's was also mentioned that there is concern over the CV's too? |

Might be on to something.....was eyeing up the flanges tonight before fitting. Just so happens the front o/s which is the six that knocks doesn't have any shims between the circlip and the drive flange and hence some free play! ?

Shims are not always needed, depends on what the end float reading is using a DTI gauge. If I was paranoid I would be more worried that it was a 2 pin diff fitted and the pin had worn an oval hole and was about to fall out causing a catastrophic failure.

With comments like that I trust you are keeping well Brian? Not sure what a DTI gauge is (yet) but think I'll get a variety of shims ordered up...... Then just wait for my new axle before my oval pinion thing bang |

Before I upset anyone i'm not questioning if you need a DTI gauge or saying the accuracy of the shims being fitted isn't important but I'm curious as to why?
Unlike the rear I presume it's to do with ensuring the cv is aligned with the pivot point of the hub? If out of centre I presume this could cause a gyroscopic effect on the cv when turnkey but wouldn't be an issue in a straight line? Thanks |

Over worked and all that.........
Yes just looked on the net and see what you mean...... Had I not been told about a DTI I'd be pulled the shaft out and put a feeler gauge between the flange and circlip? |

That's deffo not right for sure
I had something very similar once where the bolt through the Panhard rod bush, (chassis end,) was a bit loose and the bolt shaft had worn to an oval shape allowing a fair bit of play within the metal inner bush. |
