If this is the fix that has been plaguing me for 4 1/2 years there'll be celebrations for sure
![]() What is most amazing is the difference between the truck running nice and it not. Such a pleasure to drive when it's right and a real ass when it's not. I'm not convinced this is going to be the all in one fix but hopefully it's going to sort a lot of what keeps me awake at night ![]() |

all I can say is that along time ago (may be 2 years ago) I had the tracking adjusted / checked as I was concerned over tyre wear and the mechanic had a right game getting the track rod end off / adjustment of. he had to apply heat, mild damage to track rod from grips etc. I can only assume not only was the ball joints rusted to the track rod but also inside? there doesn't appear to be any particular play in the ball joints but when giving it plenty of 'wiggling' you do get the knocking noise but strangely if you left right the steering wheel there's not noise?
I'll hopefully get to have a good look at the weekend but this evening it was my local LR magician that found the problem. Not sure but think as a result of the ball joint not moving properly I 'think' the track rod ends up in the wrong place and knocks on something (not entirely sure all of the knocking might be in the ball joint only). will try and get some photos the weekend. |

Ok yep makes bit more sense
one place you can get a clatter from is where the steering bar behind front axle ( the one that links one side to other ) goes under the front diff it goes through a piece of ally channel that bolts to diff noise that can clatter as the bar vibrates in the channel tends to do it under load like if you change up a gear bit too soon and labour engine |

Guess that's it.
I 'think ' cos of ball joint not working properly the bar at times was resting on channel and even when cruising a light application of throttle would create what sounded like injector knocking? Can't wait to get it sorted..... ![]() And if this sort I take my hat of to you all for your patience. ![]() |

Applying heat to a TRE ball joint is likely to result in premature failure since it will burn out the lubricant. It is not something that a good mechanic would do. It might explain how you've managed to have a ball joint fail (if indeed you actually have) on a vehicle as young as yours - this is something which is not normally possible.
At the moment my 2007 DC is on all original steering ball joints at 170k miles of failry arduous service. To have one fail in the time, mileage, and usage your vehicle has had is remarkable. |

Agreed, any prolonged heat to the TRE joint itself will have at least knackered it's rubber boot / gaiter. The threads of the TRE and other steering bars are renowned for rusting onto the threads of the joints and I would imagine this is actually where the heat was applied. Grips would have been used on the bar in order to turn it to adjust the tracking.
A knackered TRE will result in a bit of additional play in the steering and a clonk when you wiggle the steering wheel as the slack in the joint is taken up. Worn joints are common on old vehicles but yours is still a low mileage baby. Wayne, you might be onto something with the bar running through the bit of channel on the back of the axle, but this can be easily checked by observation while someone goes from lock to lock on the steering. Hello mate.
There appears to be no evidence of a problem when you either turn the steering left right or wiggle the tyre at either 3 or 9 o'clock please only at 12 o clock. If you grab the tr and try to make the tre move it's very stiff and then moves with a clonk - very much lol forward to replacing the tr and tre's at the weekend! Will give you all an update on this on this and the 'extra' work post weekend ![]() As you say onto something here for sure. ........ April fool!!! .... sorry the April bit was a joke. ![]() |

Bit late now , but if your changing track rod ends why bother taking split pins out just undo nut and let it chop off the split pin and just undo the nut , saves the mucking about with the pin
dont do this unless your fitting new tre of course !! While it was in bits did you look inside the channel bit on the diff nose to see if any marks in it |

Had a quick much90 and no marks - think the clunking might be been the tre itself?
Been for a little drive and the noise seems to gone but need to give it some more time to be absolutely sure. The strange thing is the truck was stationary - old out new in (perfect fit - new tre's just dropped in)..... ![]() Steering wheel is now well off centre??? Will be fitting HD steering rod too so will resolve then but still ![]() |

Did you count it off then on
You don't need much to throw tracking out Even using count method a different make tre will throw tracking slightly out Should get tracking done anyway |
