I don't deal with Havoline, so can't really comment on them. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-653-5w-30.aspx Fuchs Pro S, Motul 300V and Red Line are the best options, followed by the Castrol Edge, Mobil ESP, Millers EE and XF, Fuchs GT1 and Shell Helix Ultra ECT. The others are fine as cheaper alternatives. I'm always a bit puzzled by the ACEA specs. The Manual Calls for an A1 spec all, some of those don't meet that, but my reading would appear to indicate that actualy an A3/B3 oil would provide better protection? Yes, those oils are all more up to date than A1, so will be fine. A1 is a pretty basic spec and pretty much anything will meet/exceed that spec now. The fuel economy side of it is pretty minute, I really don't think anyone has noticed a difference between an A1 and A3 5w-30 oil. Another question! I notice you've started selling the Fuchs commercial oils. How would something like the 5w30 commercial oil stack up against the usual car engine oils? Commercial oils are usually pretty basic compared to normal car oils. A lot of commercial oils are mineral or semi-synthetic, but most modern car engines require synthetics. Commercial oils are designed for large capacity, low-revving engines, with very long change intervals, which is not the same as a car engine. A lot of people consider the best option to be the cheapest one and that is usually not the case. As long as the commercial oil meets the correct specs, then it can be used in a car. I've had a quick look at the Mobil Delvac 5w-30s and they do not mention the Ford 913 or 934 specs, so don't cover what the modern Defenders require. That means that they wouldn't be suitable for warranty use. If it has a DPF, using a non-934B spec oil could lead to a blocked DPF. I don't know if the Au and SA models have DPFs, but I think DPFs are far more common in Europe than elsewhere. Because of that, a Delvac oil could be okay for it. Hi All!
Quick question, a friend of mine who is wise in the ways of the Rover, says that for the gearboxes (transmission, t-case, differentials) it's OK to use regular Shell Spiral oils. Is this true? My change interval for the gearboxes is almost around and was about to buy some other branded gear oils (Motul, LiquiMoly, et al.) as per the cheat sheets and specs but of course, they'll cost more. Of course engine oils are a different story and I use LiquiMoly Special Tec F for that. So what do all y'all think? |

Some Shell Spirax products are good synthetics, some are fairly basic mineral oils, so it depends which ones you use. Assuming yours is the 1999 td5 in your sig? You will need an SAE 90 GL5 for the transfer case, something like this http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-68903-fuchs-ti...f-oil.aspx
Originally the gearbox took something called MTF 94, this is essentially a modified engine oil. You can still use this or you can upgrade to a modern 75w-80 GL4 such as these here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-670-75w-80-75w...fluid.aspx To make things easy you can use the same GL5 SAE90 used for the transfer case for the front and rear diff.
