My understanding of the difference between GL4 and GL5 transmission oils is the amount of protection it provides to the yellow metal content of the transmission, ie synchromesh hubs etc. GL4 is a low detergent oil and therefore gives better yellow metal and phosphorous element protection than GL5.
Best to stick to the exact oil spec given by the motor manufacturer particularly if your vehicle is still under warranty. Defender 90XS SW Mini Countryman Cooper S Morgan Plus 8 |

After upgrading my TD5 oils at your recommendation, I'm looking for possible (if any advantage) alternatives for Old's Cool, my early 90.
Land Rover 90 1984 68000 miles from new 2.25 petrol Light use, sub 2k miles per year, usually dry stored over winter. Suggestions? He who dies with the most toys...wins! |
