Hey Terrier!! Get off my ankles!! I promise you, I really do get your "clean green" concerns, really I do, only I am a little old school here and I believe a free market system will achieve better environment friendly technology than Big Brother over in Belgium Not so long ago we remember how commie countries all struggled to get decent consumer goods, including good cars, and all they had was kak like the Soviet GAZ / Skjoda knock-offs which I would not use as a kennel, not even for borderline borderterriers. - why? How did this happen? Because their Soviet Big Brother told them what they were permitted to like and nobody spent any resources on R & D. Who would spend money on R & D if the products produced by your R & D turn out illegal to market anyway? - R & D was spent by us here in the "Free" west and it was stolen from us by them. On this side of the curtain we had what used to be called "freedom" look it up, it really was a brilliant idea for a socio/political/economic system, and it really worked well too! In this system the legislature passed regulations determining what minimum requirements needed to be met by the manufacturers - how they met these minimum requirements was their own business. Viola!! the invention of the catalytic converter - since then how far have we come? Nowhere except to reverse engineer a perfectly functional diesel motor and convert it from a unit which efficiently produces thrust to a unit which acts as a furnace and thrust and is rubbish at both. Why? The result? R & D - tonnes and tonnes of money no longer spent on R&D by the almost extinct "private sector" which previously produced far superior products to anything the Ruskies or any socialists system could trundle out. Now Big Brother has migrated to Brussels and London and who do you think is going to spend R&D dollars now? The "State" has already decided what is good for us - nothing more to discover here pal. We are on our way developing our own 1940 Gaz / Skjoda and already we are seeing things like 1 year old vehicles destroyed by diesel filled crankshafts. Even 1940's Soviet catastrophes were not that krappy, and that was almost a century ago! The best way to protect the environment is not to protect the EU and USA markets from Chinese motor car manufacturers, which is ACTUALLY what these stupid MoT laws are about, but rather to set a minimum standard to the industry and force them to come up with the technology which meets that standard. If the Chinese can produce more desirable and efficient vehicles - well then our motor industries will suffer - too bad, economies do have to go through these structural changes no matter how much politicians prefer to maintain the status quo. In a nutshell I believe these "environmental friendly MoT laws" are merely a ploy to legitimately prevent Chinese access to the markets which the Chinese would otherwise have free access to exploit, and they do not efficiently address pollution issues at all. China is not really interested in being forced to produce the krap Belgium wants us to buy. If i am not driving my 110 Defender I am on my boat chewing up diesel at the rate of 60 Kgs per hour so you should be encouraging me to play with the Defender and not the 60 foot Hatteras - One trip from Sarasota to New York chews up almost a ton of Diesel of fuel - ipso facto a return trip equals two tonnes. Two tonnes of fule equals 20% of all the diesel you will use during the entirel guarantee period of your 2.2 - and that is only ONE TRIP! Give me a 2.2 the way I like it and I will probably cancel 5 trips annually - total saving? equals ALL the diesel for the entire guaranteed life of a Defender 110. so stop chomping away at my ankles pal, encourage me to use less diesel and lets just put this rubbish to rest shall we? ****CENSORED**** |

I don't remember who but someone famous is quoted as saying 'law's are for the guidance of the wise and the blind obedience of fools'. I am with rockjaw on this, set a minimum standard as high as you can and allow the how to work itself out. Being prescriptive on how leads to stagnation of ideas and as we all know if you stop evolving you die. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

The UK stopped evolving in 2008 - 2010, since then it's slowly been dying off.... And continues to...
I blame the "official" people that have came into power since. The US IMO has a better president and a better business ethic that rewards, this country doesn't. Your either rich or poor and very very little in between. Regarding emissions controls, they area good thing IMO but should not be used or developed in suchlike way it restricts the use of it's intended purpose such this EGR business and the like. I like the UK but it has / is turning into something that I don't like and once that change has occurred it will be irreplaceable.  No Guts, No Glory.

I wouldn't say JLR have stopped evolving. Their profits are bigger than ever to. Also there is a list as long as your arm with successful companies. Britain is growing and the stuff we are producing is world leading.
It's a shame about all this cat rubbish. It will affect a lot of people not just in the defender. My brother in law used to have a de cat Subaru. Hopefully a cost effective replacement will be along soon. |

But you have to remember JLR have fingers in pies so to speak all over the world so aren't UK reliant.
Regarding the CAT issues, MOTs silly but so is the US laws not allowing the new Defender over there. Doug Bader had a fabulous life filled with the greatest adventures - I very much doubt he would have chosen to live that life any other way, despite the tragic loss of his legs. Besides, I hope none of us forgets that merely fighting in the RAF without his legs was "breaking the law" and a few of those had to be twisted to get him in - I sure am pleased men like him were around during those days. Instead of worrying about CO2 or particulate output we should be concentrating on the Whole Life environmental impact of any vehicle or process. eg: which has the least impact on the environment from conception to destruction, a Defender or a Prius?
Why change from old tungsten bulbs to the New Enviro friendly bulbs that cost 10 times more, don't last 10 times longer and have to be disposed of in the correct manner? If we were really concerned about mans effect on the environment we would all be working to help the 3 rd world jump to modern day standards without having to go through the high carbon evolution we did and learn from our mistakes. It will never happen the Enviromentalist Lobby is making too much money out of it all.  LANDYWATCH

Just looking for a sneaky loophole or deceptive idea, not to necessarily make it legal.
Is there a difference in regulation whether your Defender is registered as a Commercial or not? Would fitment of a private plate say.. As I understand it, if it left the factory with it fitted, it's required to secure a pass. Private plate won't help, it's a linked up world!
