Not passionate, just the principle of the thing really. There's no stick to let go of, it's a conversation on an open forum. It looks like a lengthy debate as it plays out over a number of days on here rather than the 10 mins it would probably take if it was discussed face to face!

The tables you posted are interesting but with regards to the EGR Nitrous Oxide as far as I am aware (I may be wrong) is not measured in the UK at present? I didn't know we made cats. For some reason I thought they were made in Norway.
Once they have gathered in all the bad stuff our engines produce, how do they dispose of them. I am in the camp of more mpg less fuel used, less damage to environment. Oh buy the way I have a de-cat pipe for sale for a 2.4 if anyone is interested! Don't think I'll get much for it now. |

So in terms of the environment it's not that good. You make them and your defender doesn't have one that says a lot. I've driven TD5 without and they seem a lot freer.

That does seem to be the case going forward but that wasn't the point of my comment. It was merely to highlight the fact that passing the current emissions test with good results was not related to the presence or otherwise of those components, as the equipment used doesn't test for what they do. Regardless of the legalities, CAT's on diesels are a strange phenomenon. Their fitment seems to have been driven by a political desire to be seen to be doing something rather than sound engineering as, generally, diesels don't run hot enough for them to work properly anyway. That same political desire also saw the death of lean-burn petrol engines, which held a lot of promise in terms of efficiency and low emissions but weren't compatible with the CAT technology being imposed and so development was dropped. A DPF, by comparison, should be a positive thing, as it's intended to solve one of the biggest problems with diesels, i.e. soot. It's just a shame that they seem to have been implemented so poorly, being prohibitively expensive to replace and requiring even more fuel to be burnt just to make them work. 'You couldn't make it up' is the phrase that springs to mind. As an aside, i read recently that there's more carbon in the air from tyres wearing down (which have a high carbon content to make them black) than from exhaust emissions which, if true, makes a mockery of the whole thing.
