Contamination by water

Biodiesel may contain small but problematic quantities of water. Although it is not miscible with water, it is, like ethanol, hygroscopic (absorbs water from atmospheric moisture).[32] One of the reasons biodiesel can absorb water is the persistence of mono and diglycerides left over from an incomplete reaction. These molecules can act as an emulsifier, allowing water to mix with the biodiesel.[citation needed] In addition, there may be water that is residual to processing or resulting from storage tank condensation. The presence of water is a problem because:

Water reduces the heat of combustion of the bulk fuel. This means more smoke, harder starting, less power.
Water causes corrosion of vital fuel system components: fuel pumps, injector pumps, fuel lines, etc.
Water & microbes cause the paper element filters in the system to fail (rot), which in turn results in premature failure of the fuel pump due to ingestion of large particles.
Water freezes to form ice crystals near 0 °C (32 °F). These crystals provide sites for nucleation and accelerate the gelling of the residual fuel.
Water accelerates the growth of microbe colonies, which can plug up a fuel system. Biodiesel users who have heated fuel tanks therefore face a year-round microbe problem.
Additionally, water can cause pitting in the pistons on a diesel engine.
Previously, the amount of water contaminating biodiesel has been difficult to measure by taking samples, since water and oil separate. However, it is now possible to measure the water content using water-in-oil sensors.[citation needed]

Water contamination is also a potential problem when using certain chemical catalysts involved in the production process, substantially reducing catalytic efficiency of base (high pH) catalysts such as potassium hydroxide. However, the super-critical methanol production methodology, whereby the transesterification process of oil feedstock and methanol is effectuated under high temperature and pressure, has been shown to be largely unaffected by the presence of water contamination during the production phase.

To be clear, this post is in relation to pure bio-fuel (b100), not the up to 7% blends that we all use when we fill up at the forecourts, although, I assume that the water related issues relating to B100 could still be pertintent to a much smaller level in b7.

Also brake fluid is a oil but is also hygroscopic.

Been using 2 stroke in the Puma 110 for a while. The warning light binged on today at 563 kms-that is about 350 miles. Do not know what the mpg comes out as, as I fill her up at home. This fill up I did not use 2 stroke but put some Millers in the tank. Did not know whether to mix the Millers with the 2 stroke or not. Next fill up I will revert to the 2 stroke. Don't think that the 2 stroke does much to increase mpg but it makes the engine sound so smooth.That Millers sure does smell-I can still smell off my clothes!! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Well i have ran a few tanks through my TD5 now and today was MOT time. The emissions test was 0.13 which is the lowest ive ever had so looks like it is cleaning up the engine. It does sound smoother and pull better too i think but havent done enough mileage to record any accurate change in fuel consumption but looking at how many miles im getting to a tank it does look favourable.

Filled my DC up on Saturday evening and for the first time added two stroke, JASO FC. I was going to put in 200ml but due to the forecourt being dark and the bottle being black, I ended up adding around 350ml!

Did 250 miles during the course of Sunday and I have to admit that I was very pleasently surprised - the engine seems quieter, smoother and more responsive! Despite all that has been written, I still find it hard to believe quite how much differernce it has made.

I will try the same in the TD5 Disco when I next fill that up.

First crack at doping with 2 stroke today.

Using JASO FB Mineral by Motul (thanks Opie)

Mix ratio of 1:200'ish but erring on side of caution to weaker rather than stronger

I'm still amazed by the recent improvement that the shot of Forte made, so can't say I've noticed any further improvement in the uptake of the engine so far, but it is certainly considerably quieter. So much so my daughter even noticed the turbo whistle. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

Well, after my above comment and a bit more investigating, i have now run 3 tanks with 1:200 "FB" oil and there is definitely an improvement in performance, economy and engine noise.

after about 50 miles i am starting to 'hear' the difference in both cold start and acceleration under load. i'm going to wait until after the 1st couple of tanks before i make a judgement. so far so good. BM52

Don't forget to also use diesel injector cleaner every 2000km or so Thumbs Up --

i've just changed my fog and reversing light around by swapping pins 7 & 8 on the loom connector, saves rewiring and messing about ..

Two stroke oil ? Defently YES.
I must agree with you guys in favor of adding 1:200 ration of two stroke oil in diesel tanks.
Defently the engine turns quiter, smoother and maybe more powerfull..
I had to change all four diesel injectors of my 2007 Tdci Defender recently, and I am very concerned about the health of the fuel injection system from now on.
I strongly recomend the use of TS oil even in tuned engines like mine.
