You guys are crazy. I wouldn't add 2-stroke oil to my Puma if you paid me to.
I equate it to using the "Bass" and "Trebble" buttons on a good hifi. Why? The Sound Engineers surely know what they're doing? They would have suggested messing around with the sound balance on the CD cover if it were a good idea. Likewise, why mess with the highly qualified Chemical Engineers and Chemists at the big oil producers? Also, there would be an official notice in the owners manual or from the LR dealer if it was a good thing? Food for thought? www.ralton.co.za |

LR, and other manufacturers, will never approve of such things - it would open them to all sorts of lawsuits. Emissions legislations also come into play: by adding 2So, you are effectively creating more emissions than what the manufacturer has committed to. Ralton, the use of 2So is widespread in Europe because their diesel contains a percentage of biodiesel which eats away at the pump & filter. SA's 50ppm is still ok, but wait until they start mixing biodiesel here as well - injectors and pumps will be dropping like flies! I put 2So in all my vehicles, in my previous D2 Td5, in my current A3 TDi and in the Puma. All run much smoother! |

Well, I guess depends on your budget!
I'm adding it to every other fill-up, and Forte twice a year. Had read that the optimum ratio to add was 1:200, so for a full tank on a 110, you are looking at 375ml. I use an old plastic (see-through) drinks bottle, marked up with a line at 375ml. Of course, if you're NOT putting in 75litres at fill-up, you need to do some swift mental arithmetic to work out the dilution, taking into account the amount already in there. This is why I'm only adding to every other tank, as I don't trust my arithmetic! Whilst we're on this subject, does anyone have a good source for suitable 2-stroke oil in bulk. I've been buying the Halfords 1l bottles, which isn't very cost-efficient!

Please be aware that if your Puma has a catalytic converter and/or diesel particulate filter, it is imperative that you use a non-fully-synthetic JASO-FC rated 2SO! If you use something else, the 2SO will not burn off completely and ash will accumulate in your cat. This a cross post from a landy forum, this chap knows his stuff. Obviously the information is related to South African conditions, but lots of useful info nonetheless:

OMG what a difference.
Have a few containers of fully syth 2stroke oil in the garage and have ment to try this a few times. This morning I put a slug of the oil in, and about 10 miles later you can hear and feel the difference. All good. Am worried that it makes the fuel red, and that I may get in pooh for running red diesel Andy |

SZRACER, try H&M (hancock & maskell) in Evesham on the A46 on the industrial estate opposite McD's, bought 5 litres of low ash 2 stroke in the summer for £12 ish.

Have been putting JASO FC SPEC Castrol 2 stroke in the Puma for a few fills now as I was not happy with that new Shell clean diesel. The Puma, while I always regarded it as "quiet" as far as a Defender goes is even quieter when you stand beside it. Drives beautifully and seems to be doing well on the 2 stroke. It is an expensive business adding the 2 stroke to every fill as the Castrol stuff is not cheap.
I have been adding Halfords FB spec. 2 stroke to the 200 tdi. This is cheaper than the Castrol and it does make a difference to the tdi. A bit more responsive and cruises beautifully. Does not sound as agricultural when criusing along. Thinking of trying some cheaper stuff in the tdi that the local tractor dealer sells in 5 litre containers for chain saws etc. I know that the Puma does not have a DPF but according to the handbook it does have a catalytic converter so I do not want to put the cheaper FB spec 2 stroke through it. I tried it a few times with no ill effects, but always returned to the higher spec Castrol. It would be nice to be able to use the cheaper stuff in the Puma but I am not too sure how the catalytic converter would cope with it. Anyway that's my story so far. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

You should only use mineral oil, as semi and synthetic don't burn up completely leaving ash deposits in the cat. I use Motul 100 MOTO MIX 2T Lubricant for 2 Stroke engines from site sponsor Opie oils. It is a mineral oil with rating JASO FB. JASO FC is a low ash oil which I have in the garage for my 2 stroke outboard engines, but wont risk using it in my landy as it is semi-synthetic. Basically any mineral 2 stroke oil with JASCO FB rating will do.
