That is the stuff I put in my Puma too, expensive but as I buy diesel in bulk i.e. 1000 litres and get a discount it does not work out too bad in the end. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

The thread on 2 stroke use has been removed from the freel2.com site so that Martin can tidy it up. But when it was available the man in the know recommends using FB or FC preferably the cheapest available. I use FB because it is the cheapest and its wholly mineral oil. Problems start to arise when using synthetic oils due to the cat being clogged up by ash not being burnt up completely in the combustion chamber. If you don't have a cat then I would say to use what you want as you don't have anything to clogg up. As to how much too put in the tank? Some say 300ml, others say 200ml. I go for 50 litres of diesel gets 200ml-300ml or if the container is nearly empty, whatever is left in it goes in the tank. Mineral 2 stroke is oil, as is diesel fuel so the two mix together nicely and if you think you've put too much in, put less in next time. |

Hi Lorryman I have read this thread a few times and am a little confused too as to which oil to use. The only technical information given in this thread was quoted from Naks. "For All Series LR and Disco1 and 2 a Jaso-FB rated oil is fine. For Disco 3 and 4 a JASO-FC rated oil has to be used, such as the Fuchs oil. " The disco 3 + 4 are the common rail diesels and more like the Puma engine which is also common rail. "2. Self cleaning of engine internals, as JASO-FC compliant 2-stroke oil burns cleaner and better than diesel. Due to this there is also about a 3-5% gain in fuel economy." Here it is said the JASO-FC burns cleaner than diesel. My conclusion is that it is the FB which produces the ash and the FC produces less and should be used in the newer engines. I have a TD5 and have tried it (JAS0-FC) and do believe it makes a difference, newer diesel fuel now contains more and more bio diesel which is not only bad for your pump/injectors I believe is no good for rubber fuel lines. Over time they will be effected and perish if not designed for use with bio diesel. Most diesels now have between 5% to 7% bio with Morrisons diesel being as much as 15%. Steve |

If Morrisons are putting 15% bio in, then they've just managed to invalidate every single vehicle manufacturer warranty in one go. UK diesel spec is BS EN590 and at the moment, the maximum bio (FAME) content in diesel is 7% otherwise, it is 'off-spec' and cannot be marketed. It was 5% up until a year or so ago. UK current minimum blend until April is 3.5% as an average across all fuels, so fuel suppliers 'on average' across all their fuel sales must demonstrate a minimum of 3.5% bio blended into their fuels. So in some areas, it will be more and some less. As long as they meet the average, then they are compliant. As to which type of two stroke to use....... I'm with Lorryman on the concept of blending oils..... If you blend two mineral components then they are from a common base. I have no idea if this is technically correct, it just makes logical sense. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

I understand the blending now. That makes the non-use of synthetic clear, I always have had to be told something twice Maybe the Morrisons info. is a little out of date, I will still not use Morrisons though. They had 30% bio at one point but think it was sold as 30% Thanks Lorryman/party monkey |

Party Monkey.
I think I'm right in saying citreon warranty their cars upto 30% bio. and I believe PSA engines are also 30% so that in theory would cover the freeL2 however LL will only warranty to.....I think its now 7% ? - was 5%. its all a load of b*****ks - there very nice RRS 3 ltr is running just the same of 50% bio ? apparently |

Thanks Caterham,
Fair point and I stand corrected.... I was working on old info, where manufacturers used to warrant max 5%. Current UK/EU diesel spec is max 7% bio, previously 5% as you mentioned. So I guess some manufacturers are only warranting to prevailing fuel specs. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

It seems we have forgotten the reason for using 2Stroke oil in the first place, which is to lubricate the injector pump and injectors due to the reduction in sulphur (Low sulphur diesel) which did the lubrication in the first place. So as to what oil to put in the tank surely it should be the cheapest lowest spec JASO-FB which is basically being added to prolong the life of the fuel system by adding some lubrication. Semi and fully synthetic oils contain castor oil and other chemicals to help keep the spark plugs and exhaust vents carbon free on petrol engines, to help lubrication of high revving petrol engines, none of which pertains to a diesel engine. I now put a tank of Shell v power/ BP Ultimate every 4 tank fulls as this contains cleaning agents pertaining to a diesel engine, and use JASO-FB in the other 3 tank fulls. Again all of this is my sole opinion and wouldn't wish to impose my views on what you should use in your Landy, and if you go to Opie oils website you get good deals on FB and FC 2T oils as anyone registered on this forum gets the members discount. If I remember correctly the last order of 4L Motul 100 JASO FB cost £23 delivered to my home I could probably get a cheaper oil elsewhere but I'm a lazy sod and delivered to the door suits me.

I was talking to a mate of mine this evening (a petrochemical engineer) and he was pretty damning about this. The gist of what he said was "this is diesel, its oil, its already a lubricant - if we're talking petrol then maybe there is a point with certain types of engine, but with diesel, there is no point in doing this at all. Any perceived benefit is purely placebo. Show me a paper which details the reasons why it's a good idea and I'll take a look and give you a view". I've been googling and whilst there is a lot of forum discussion all over the world about it, there seems be no research and no definitive answer.
I argued with him about placebo, mine is definitely quieter, no question about it. A different friend came green laning with me yesterday and he drove there and said whats happened to it? its SO much quieter". So yes, this is all anecdotal, and is not evidence per se, but I am SURE its quieter. So, feeling a little confused about this at the moment. Mike, once the post comes back up on Freel2.net there is a scientific paper out on the benefits of using 2stroke oil. The German bloke whom is the expert on this is very Knowledgeable and if Martin appears hopefully he will name him and his credentials for all of us. As to the motul oil thats what I use.

all this talk of bio does make me chuckle. IF its been made correctly then its loads better for the motor than dino diesel.
Fractional distallation is another method that the aussies are using, heating waste plastic in a sealed drum and condensing the gas, you get 80% diesel 20% petrol. pom edit for math fail Last edited by pom on 7th Feb 2011 10:32pm. Edited 1 time in total |
