Defender Puma Clutch Issues
Doing a bit of research.

My 130 has had 3 clutches so far and I think its about to have another. I'm Trying to determine if there are issues with certain vehicles. My 130 has a very lumpy tick over and at around 2700rpm the engine is very very lumpy. I am wondering if this roughness has anything to do with clutch failure. In simple terms the little springs in the clutch drive flange are designed to take up the acceleration and deceleration forces to provide a smooth drive. however I am wondering if the 'torqueynes' and roughness of the engine constantly hammering fook out of the little springs is causing the clutch springs to weaken issue.
If my theory is correct this would only occur on vehicles that ran rough so in theory if you have a rough runner it will keep eating clutches until they either smooth out the engine or build stronger clutches. If you have never had a clutch issue in theory you should have no problems.

So the questions are as above.

Q Have you had no clutch issues.
Q Have you had a Clutch change followed by no more issues
Q Have you had more than one clutch
Q Have you had more than one clutch and are expecting more

Please find a picture of a Series Clutch, in a Puma the coil springs become weak and get smaller allowing tooooo much free play between the drive flange in the centre and the friction plates. This then causes rattling clunking and the delightful clank clank clank when the engine is stopped.

Thats what happened to mine after 30k miles, spring fell out in Dundee had to drive home to Yorkshire with intermittent clutch Sad .
Try not to change to early into 6th gear now as I think the torque judder this can produce eats the clutch springs. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

do they have the same problem with transits ? or is it a different clutch ? I can't see white van man putting up with clutch issues

My first Puma had two in 14k miles. My 09 has done 13k and so far so good but knowing my luck will hold out until just after the waranty runs out. Yes it is lumpy as hell!!!!!! Never been the same since the last download update but all I get is the standard answer "they all do that" Rolling Eyes

I believe the new spec clutch is ok...
I've had 3 clutches - the first two were the old spec (Ford spec), and this third one is the new spec (Land Rover) clutch.
As a rough statement: If your clutch is 2007/2008 version, i think there is a fair chance it'll break. If it's a 2009/2010 version you'll probably be ok... www.ralton.co.za

I thought (but may be wrong) that the tranny Puma has a dual-mass flywheel. If so, then the clutch will be totally different since it won't have the springs at all.

Really? My third one (have it in my hands) has the Ford brand stamped.
