Three(3) squeeks when switching off?
Over the past 2 weeks, when switching off my Defender (Puma 90 Diesel with 2.8 Ford Transit engine), I hear 3 or 4 loud squeeks (Like some unoiled plates rubbing together. It appears to come from somewhere near the top RH side of the engine block. Any ideas as to cause? Edskoi

egr valve self cleaning - perfectly normal (if you have an egr valve)

I had mine replaced recently under warranty. Quiet as a mouse again.
I've read that it is because it dries out. Don't think it's really an issue, just a bit noisy.

If it's true, I would very much like to know how to prevent and/or solve it when it happens.

They usually do it when older I think, mine doesn't squeak at all only do the cleaning cycles.

inside the egr valve are a electric motor and gearbox that drive the spindle opening and closing the valve , the trouble is the black sooty smoke gets passed the spindle and fills gearbox with carbon and dries all the grease out and just clogs everything and in the end seizes them solid also inside there are position indicators that get covered in soot , I know this because I have broke them open to see what's inside

sometimes you can see traces of black soot around the joint on the valve normally where the clips are that hold the gearbox cover on if you can see this it's knackered

Thanks for info guys, Based upon your replies, especially soot build-up, I have decided to only use low sulphur Diesel (50 ppm instead of 500 ppm) is now available in South Africa. Edskoi

Edskoi, only use 50ppm.

Also, if the EGR self-cleaning is screeching, have it seen to.

When the EGR was still active on mine, I found that using 2-stroke oil made it quieter.

this is what a normal EGR cycle sounds like:  --
