Thanks all.
I was thinking of taking the axle to a sandblaster. quite a bit of cleaning needed in the knocks and crannies where the shock and radius arms bolt to. I have already capped the ends (I just turned some PVC and hammered them in the ends)... so would only have needed to make a plate where the diff fits. In the end I decided to let the rust remover do its job. It is slow, but effective. Patience is key (and a bit of elbow grease just to make it work faster). For those wondering what rust remover I use, here is a link. https://hg.eu/uk/products/hg-rust-remover It is effective as it claims, I use it undiluted, just brush it on. It is not a very harsh chemical, actually has a 'sweet' smell, but a bit irritant if you get it on your hands. The problem is it has been out of stock locally for quite a while, and I am running low 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Did you consider using a needle-scaler instead of blasting?

Been busy with the spray gun. Few more parts done. Hope to get the front axle less the swivel balls under the chassis, radius arms and panhard rod were done a while ago. So then I can start with the engine, which hopefully frees up some space.

Was not easy getting the axle case (final drive and diff on) whilst making sure that no paint is scratched and single handed. But now in and I think looks good. Strap in pic was to align panhard rod.

Thank you db950. I have admired your build.
I think next step will be re building the 19J. I know that there are not a lot of fans of this engine, but will keep you all posted just the same. Only problem is that next update will take a while (December probably) due to travels 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Finally got about to continue stripping the engine.
Here preparing to get the crank and camshaft out. Click image to enlarge Crank bearing caps off: Click image to enlarge And the engine block fully stripped for cleaning. I have taken all core plugs since pics, so can do proper flush. Surprised at how little corrosion was on the core plugs.
