Been busy removing the paint off the bonnet frame. Paint remover and a lot of elbow grease. Done both sides. Will get the corners with a diy blaster kit.

Absolutely wonderful resto you are doing Dinnu, I reckon it's going to end up better than new.
The only thing you need to do, to make it perfect, is to drop a V8 into it!!! Congratulations on a top job & top workmanship. Pickles. |

Early 90 Hard Tops came with galvanised cappings, they weren't only used on series vehicles. Nice work though - reminds me fondly of mine which I have no doubt has now disintegrated. |

Thank you for your comments.
Right, early 90s had galvanized cappings. Forgot about those. Had one myself with lift up door handles. Most likely that also disintegrated The V8 option has crossed my mind. Economy is not an issue for a weekend driver. Locally i can get a 3.5 EFI from a Range Rover complete with ecu. Do not know if the ones on the 90s were EFIs or carburated. Any engine bay pictures from an original installation? As i am afraid I might not get all the parts for a good install. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Since I am going to the galvanizers with the bonnet frame, I thought I also get the battery box done. Same as with the bonnet frame, I removed most of the old paint with paint remover. Then I got out a DIY sand blasting kit I purchased years ago but never used to get to the knocks and crannies. I think will be the last time I used the blasting kit.
Click image to enlarge I hope they accept to re galvanize the inner mudguards. I heard that they do not accept previously galvanized parts. Most of the galvanizing is gone from the outside of the mudguards, but the engine bay side is still looking nice! 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

V8s were only ever normally aspirated 3.5s from the factory, no EFi and no 3.9s.
Nothing stopping you putting a 3.5 EFi in it from a RRC or Discovery though, my brother has just that - started with a 3.5 carb, replaced it with a 3.5 EFi when it wore out then replaced that with a JE built 3.9 His was a hard top but has been converted to a soft top so he can roll the canvas sides up in the summer but still keep the sun off him. |

Apart from the 3.9 NAS 110, NAS90 1994-5 MY 14CUX and 50th Anniversary and NAS90 1997 MY 4litre GEMS V8.
Mine has a 3.9 14CUX 3.9 serpentine from a D1 fitted now. Works a treat. JB @Lodelaner Instagram Youtube greenlaning and other LR related content |

- I completely forgot about the 50th & was ignoring the NAS spec as we never had them in the UK - that's my story & I'm sticking to it

As Widget says, He's got a 3.9 in his & it works beautifully.
I'm sure there are many possibilities, and with your obvious skills I'm sure a properly researched installation would create no problems for you. I'm not really up with L.R. V8s but instead of EFI you might find that you would get good results with a Holley 4 barrel,...lots of stuff you could do, and the additional performance would make a V8 conversion very worthwhile. Collected some shiny parts today. All parts came really well although found a few dents that were not there on delivery. Probably the staff are more used to handle heavy duty steel structures.
Click image to enlarge A bit of cleaning from residual zinc, and made a dry fit of the bonnet frame. Both skin and frame will be painted before being re bonded together. Hi Pickles, have really been thinking about the V8 route... I love the V8 sound, and for sure there will be more oomph. Agree that it would also make the 90 more desirable.
But in the end, I am restoring it for myself. I have loads of memories, hearing, feeling and smelling an old diesel. So keeping the 90 as close to how I always know it would be nice too I guess. So probably the 19J will stay. The chassis number is also saying that it has a diesel turbo 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
