I bought the Allisport air box as my original plastic one was cracking and breaking up. The Allisport is a doodle to fit, thank god, as the original is a right bear to remove. The choice of air filter is a bit odd, from a 90s Nissan/Ford and not that common now. Simple enough to adapt something else though. I'm going to see if I can fit one from a 80's Jag as they have a simply huge surface area.
As to air flow, of course it doesn't flow well. The outlet opening is simply terrible: a flat, oval hole with rough, edges. About the only way you could make it worse is if you plugged it with a cork. I'm going to look into either fitting a proper bell mouth, or make up a new lid/outlet that does the job properly. I'm not unhappy though, it was a reasonable price. |

I was actually considering this until I read jbcollier's review.
Another issue, if you an call it that, is that I was planning to use this with the Nakatanenga RAI that comes through the wing. AlliSport informed me that the kit they have that passes through the top of the wing is only for RHD vehicles, not sure why that is though. For the LHD, the only option is the side intake as per factory / Nugget Stuff. I think you can buy just the box itself but I will have to confirm. In any case, another thing was the Nakatanenga kit has an 80mm hose but the fittings on the AlliSport kit are 76mm (as per AlliSport). Can I just plumb the 80mm hose onto the 76mm inlet then apply sikaflex then tighten the bejesus out of it or do I have to look for an adapter part or possibly have one fabricated? Are there still metal Nugget Stuff kits out there in the wild? Maybe this was the best solution all along? Or maybe, get the kit that exits the side as before , make sure it's all sealed tight, then seal the RAI onto it? I really want the Nakatanenga RAI to replace my Mantec Plastic Jobby RAI. If I can't get the one that enters the top of the wing, I guess the more traditional approach still works as they have the kit for that too, fortunately. Looking to see more reviews on this box and any possible leads on a NuggetStuff metal waterproof box. No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy |

I posted on this thread months ago that my ali sport air box, which has the low entry or standard air intake pipe at the bottom was less efficient than the standard plastic air box with standard filter..
Mas air flow figures and scope data on the maf sensor both confirmed the air box was the restriction..that is a repeatable fact .. I also thought the outlet arrangment was on inspection a rather badly cut out hole in a flat surface and not conducive to smooth or good air flow. I'm running my standard air box again with the flexible air intake pipe supplied with the ali sport kit supplying the standard air box and my air flow figures are back to or marginally better than when i started to try and improve the engine breathing.. also worth mentioning I consider the exhaust side as important if you want to increase the efficiency 👍 My intention is one day to revisit the ali sport box and have a play with it to see if it can be improved in terms of its air flow ... |

I have the LHD Nakatanenga RAI kit on mine as well. No snorkel though, just a wing top inlet with a rain/snow cover. The LHD Nakatanenga kit also relocates the heater air intake to the side of the wing. This adds greatly to the expense of the kit.
Pluses and minuses: + no problem tightening an 80mm hose to a 76mm (3 inch) pipe. + considerably simplifies an otherwise tortuous stock intake ducting. + no plastic cracking and fatiguing. - the side of the wing is not a high pressure zone -- unlike the top -- so you have to turn on the fan to get air flow. - the mentioned-above poor outlet from the air filter (though I think this will be fixable) Again, all in all, I'm happy with the results |

I'm thinking of modifying something like this:
Click image to enlarge It would have to be cut at the right angle to match so it might need to be longer. It doesn't need to be perfect to flow a lot better. Last edited by jbcollier on 29th Nov 2024 5:37am. Edited 1 time in total |

Hi andy63, this information is well received and I thank you for bringing it up.
Thank you, jbcollier! This is the information I’ve been looking for! (The hose diameter bit) the other nuggets of wisdom are well received as well. Now that we’ve determined this, is there a better waterproof airbox alternative? Or maybe when andy63 gets around to tinkering, we can find an optimal solution to make this variant of the waterproof airbox all the more the better No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy |

I thought id commented further on this the other night when I had some signal..
Currently playing in morocco and signal is poor a lot of the time.. I mentioned my figures are ased on the maf sensor data, I thought that reasonable as that's what's used by the system.. The turbulence caused by the abrupt transition of the ali sport box may be having an effect..I did also say earlier that in driving I havnt really noticed any real difference between the ali sport and standard box, but the figures/volumetric eff are better with the standard box.. |

Outside diameter of the inlet fits a 4inch or 102mm hose
Inside diameter of the same inlet I think is 89mm or 3.5 inches. The Nugget Stuff kit had a connection pipe that could be tapped home with some sealant and the hose connected to it. Revotec do a line of suitable aluminium reducers for the diy kit option. I went with a 4 inch hose directly over the inlet but the hose is too close to the alternator bolt and kept the hose but bought a reducer and a pipe (https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic93449.html) that protects against the alternator bolt by having a flat cross-section on the side near the alternator. I thought the 4 inch hose was the simpler option as it fitted directly over the airbox intake but had to backtrack Craig. “Don't believe everything you read on the internet.” ― Abraham Lincoln www.scotgrc.co.uk |
