I have a very early model. When I press the key fob, 'open tailgate' it releases the lock, then you have to pull the handle - door then opens. NO other doors or activation of vehicle systems happen.

After getting a grip on the ladder, put your foot on the top of the rear tyre and pull/step up. The other foot then goes on the ladder, and repeat. HTH.
