Defenders 25000 per year,

L200 just in the uk 12000, why shouldn't Land Rover produce a vehicle that can compete and still be a Land Rover, shouldn't we encourage them. I'm sure the Defender in it's current form will be produced somewhere and you'll be able to buy one.

But I for one encourage Land Rover to take the Defender ethos and improve it until it competes with the rest, which judging by sales at the minute it doesn't. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Interesting to see Kens pictures - especially of the red-cross hardtop.
I have to admit, as a new land rover 'product', it is growing on me. Embarassed
Whether or not I would buy one I'm not sure - like most people here, I bought the out-dated Defender over better, newer kit simply because I like it. It's all about the character for me, which is impossible to engineer into the new one.

On that point, I have a theory - the better the car, the less character (proper sports cars aside!).
All my favourite cars have been flawed in various ways.
If the eventual DC100 production car gets slated on release - I might be interested!

Are they selling them in the UK yet?

I'm in Bucharest at the moment, and they're all over the place. They don't look too bad, especially compared to the Yeti...

Downsides are: having to drive hundreds of miles either on the bump stops or with the car 6ft off the floor due to computer malfunction or holes in the airbags.

It'd be fine as an option, as long as you can specify a model with actual springs... a bit like the D3 I suppose.

Land Rover is not listening , never has , never will !! What other company would produce a vechicle for twenty years with out up grades , Hell Santana made more alterations to the defender ,pulled the seats away from doors etc !!!!!! Twenty five thousand a year is amazing sales for a product a company has let wilt and shown no interest in !!! My problem with the dc100 is it looks like a freelander not a defender , has lost its high seating for over bonnet visibility and 2 litres is to small an engine for a commercial vehicle , my mates plastic can am commander has a 1 litre engine in a glorified quad bike !!!!

Its called niche marketing - produce a product the world doesnt need !

Meanwhile the real world buys Toyotas , by there millions Question

Agree, but i'm hoping the new Defender stays afordable. If LR can deliver on the toys, ie Terrain Scanning, Sonar depth sounder (wonder if it makes that ping.....), Air Suspension, Computer console etc.... for sub £25k + VAT then great but I doubt it. More like £40k plus, and that's D4 money.

I enjoyed this comment from Robert Pepper.

"It would be good to keep Victoria Beckham as a design consultant and whatever she says, do the opposite. Then employ someone like Ellen MacArthur and whatever she says, do it."

Thumbs Up

The unfortunate thing that we have to face up to is that the Defender is no longer the vehicle of choice for Farmers, emergency organisations, Overlanders, utility companies, offroaders. It has been left behind on price, reliability, economy, load carrying space.

How many guns did you see in the Libya conflict welded to the back of Land Rovers, at one time it would have all been land rovers.

How many Farmers are using new Defenders as opposed to Jap pickups.

I'd argue the Defender is still very much in those markets, but has lost a lot of ground. This is exactly what the Defender replacement should be all about: looking at the reasons they have lost marketshare there (an area they used to completely dominate), and what can be done to rectify the situation and beat the competition. I am very fearful that the DC100 is not that vehicle, with its plastic bits and its electronic gadgets.

And, of course, it has even less load space, but maybe there will be a larger version available as well.

Well... that Defender 110 looks bloody amazing amongst those other pictures. That's a clear sign they have some way to go: your sparkling brand new concept looks kind of naff compared to the thing it's replacing! It seriously needs to get a bit more of that Defender vibe.

Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Mr. Green

Utility firms etc are not buying as many due to cost, it really is that simple. They know a Defender can out perform a Ranger/Navara/whatever, but reason that they are very rarely pushed to the absolute limit, so the extra cost to have that ability is no longer justified. For them, comfort, style etc do notcome into the equation. They would look at servicing costs, reliability, resale value maybe...that would be all. Its all run by accountants. To say the Defender has direct competitors is wrong, there are really no other vehicles with the quite same level of performance, adaptability etc. In days gone, folks bought Landrovers (series, 90/110 etc) as there was little competition. Now they can buy a pretty comfy double cap pick up which is just good enough to do what they want it to, for a cheaper price than a Defender. But it will not match a Defender.
I also think they still lose sales due to poor reputation on build quality and reliability, which they have done little to rectify. Build them properly and they will sell more. Quite simple. 2011 110 USW
