Yes I remember ... And as I said I hope BigMike is right ... And I hope we're all making a storm on a glass of water ...
![]() But saying production ready and concept, together in the same phrase, or better, production ready concept as the phrase, is something I find hard to understand! So when they now say it's only a concept, I have some reluctance to believe that ... Plenty of interesting stuff here:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/motor-...rview.html Well, interesting in the same way banging your head against a wall is interesting. This, depressingly, is the crux of it:
IMHO 'form follows function' is the definition of the Defender. To make it a stylistically-led project is to totally abandon the essence of it. And to say that form following function is an obsolete idea - what?! Is he trying to say that modern man is shallow and easily swayed by pretty but useless things? He's right of course, on the whole, but not in terms of the market the Defender has been aimed at. I also don't like the way he separates design and engineering as two competing things. As a design engineer I have to make things that work well, fulfil their intended function and are ergonomic, as well as appealing to customers aesthetically. But if you make a product that's all talk and no trousers, it'll flop. In the case of the Defender, your customer is utility companies, farmers, off-roaders, overlanders etc and they are likely to place a lot more weight on function than appearance! Which means LR are basically abandoning their original market and going after a new one. Which is fine... but calling it a Defender is a cynical cashing-in exercise, as hinted at by the ![]() Ironically it will backfire, because the reason the Defender is 'cool' and 'iconic' is because it is such a workhorse. The next one will be a hollow lifestyle accessory and so not 'cool' or 'iconic' in the slightest. Oh and we're now "traditionalists" apparently. Thanks Gerry. |

It's interesting how they use a lot of negative words up front to refer to the people who will ultimately not like the design. There has been outpourings everywhere, but of course those people don't matter as they're all just stuffy traditionalists. Well, sorry we gave you our money!
I also agree very firmly about the points about design and engineering not being separate. Truly good design is functional (a lot of people don't realise that, and end up with 'design' items which are horrible to use). For me the biggest appeal in a Landy is that it doesn't try to be something it is not. It doesn't want or need to be fashionable. That's what makes it so iconic and what people immediately connect to when they hear "Land Rover". It's the reason some people love army surplus. You free yourself from meaningless labels and pointless design details, and get to wear something which is constructed to do a job. |

Thanks for the pics Ken.
![]() A van, station wagon and a uggghhhhhh. Me thinks the DC100 is more than a concept. I have read it is using Air Suspension, I hope this gets dropped or is optional. |

Apart from bearing very little resemblance to the current Defender, they are interesting looking vehicles. The excellent pcitures of the real things do show that they certainly have presence. However, the very first thing that strikes me is how vulnerable to damage the front end is - particularly those wings that curver right down in front of the wheels.
Other than that, apart from the ridiculous wheels, the arches don't look big enough to accomodate serious suspension travel. Perhaps LR are planning to rely on traction control electrickery to make up for the shortfall, in the same way that Mercedes does with lockers on the G Wagon? The unfortunate thing that we have to face up to is that the Defender is no longer the vehicle of choice for Farmers, emergency organisations, Overlanders, utility companies, offroaders. It has been left behind on price, reliability, economy, load carrying space.
How many guns did you see in the Libya conflict welded to the back of Land Rovers, at one time it would have all been land rovers. How many Farmers are using new Defenders as opposed to Jap pickups. Original Member Pie n Pea Club. 110 HCPU Tipper |

there is still a huge world wide market for defenders.
why did everyone on here spend £20-£30k on their one? why didn't we buy a freelander? why didn't we buy a disco (commercial or otherwise)? both for the same money that we paid on the defender. keep it simple land rover - thats what is wanted |
