Hi Nige,
Hopefully someone will give you an answer on the amount of play on a brand new shaft. I haven't seen one go together, so can't comment on that.
It was very interesting to see yours come apart in the video, thanks for posting.
It all looked very clean in there, with traces of grease and no powdery rust in the coupling.

Most of the pictures of failed and badly worn shafts I've seen on here show both rust and dust, and/or shiney worn splines.
Yours looks to be in perfect condition to me, but as said, I haven't done one myself.
Before I saw the video, I would have said replace it just to be safe, however seeing how clean it is, I think I'd be tempted to give it a good coat of grease and put it back together.

Waiting for more opinions on this.

Yup same here, 2.4 USW 2011, 87k miles. Let go all of a sudden whilst doing a three point turn. 🤬

Looking at the wear in the pictures above, it looks to me as though that was not properly engaged with the spring ring secured in the groove. It's hard to be sure from the photos though.

I do think that improper assembly may be another factor in the failures.

just realised. LR are ahead of the game with this eco friendly stuff.

I hadn't realised the drive train was designed to be recycled - you can put it in your sandwich once it fails hence why they made it of cheese. Laughing

I think you'll find ther output shaft is made of cheesecake base, it's the 2.2 oil pumps that were made of cheese. Funny, because this all goes nicely with the jacobs cream cracker clutch.

As for being friendly to the enviroment, the chassis begins returning to earth from day one. Nige

Mine is TDCI 2012 covered almost 112 000 km. Since new, it has a backlash. Decided to go for Lof clutch and Ashcroft output shaft. After the change Defender drives completely different. There is no backlash and it drives wonderful.
Clust had loose springs and here are the pictures of the original output shaft

Although it does splines look good this I think this shaft is over.
Anyway, this will be my last Land Rover \ Range Rover. I am not going to sell it but I will not buy the new s...t which most probably has the same problems. Next time I will take Japanise or US offroader.

That definitely looks like it's spent its life completely dry with no lube.

The shaft ( Date of Manufacture = 15.08.2015) was greased at the LR factory.
27.400 miles
TD4 2.2 110SW
now I'm calmed down Wink
