Well, I'm just wondering why the "outer" spline is fully corroded while the "inner" spline at the MK82 has no visible rust.
This is what I learned taking a closer look at the old part LR030054 from my Land. And I'm also wondering what kind of a spline JLR integrate in their 70th Edition V8 Defenders these days 5 litre V8 engine , 405 PS - do they also use part LR030054 and the original shaft between MK82 and the transfer unit? https://www.landrover.com/explore-land-rov...derv8.html JLR integrated an 8 speed ZF automatic transmission and surely have skipped that silly shaft ... https://www.landrover.fr/explore-land-rove...405ch.html And no EGR knocks while leaving the car: |

This shaft is a particular feature of marrying up the MT82 6 speed manual to the LR transfer box. The 70th is auto only and won't require it. Darren

/\ FANTASIC !
The Ashcroft solution might work but I suspect the above solution might be better (albeit, it is slightly more expensive) |

Great to meet you too.
All sorted. Minimal backlash and drives beautifully! I’ll post some pictures later. Dave Green Goddess - 1998 Defender 110 300tdi |

Team IRB did an excellent job replacing the output shaft yesterday.
Just to recap - a slight clonk changing gear sometimes was the only symptom... So this was a preventative maintenance session in reality - and to put my mind at ease before some lengthy trips towing the caravan. Before - notice how clean everything looks - no signs of a problem at all:- Click image to enlarge During - shroud and rubber seal removed - a slight hint of corrosion:- Click image to enlarge During - uh ho:- Click image to enlarge Loads of rust but just some congealed grease visible. Click image to enlarge Splines about 50% worn - which in reality means failure could be imminent:- Click image to enlarge Shiny new bits being prepared and fitted properly this time:- Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Net result - about as good as it gets with this transmission setup. I already have the one-piece rear half shafts and the front and rear diffs are in very good condition too. Overall, very happy indeed. PS The danger with visiting IRB is what your wallet gets up to when you aren't paying attention and your guard is down. For some reason I was sitting very comfortably indeed on the way home... My 07 Puma had early signs of the clutch death rattle and had it replaced toghether with the ashcroft shaft upgrade.
It was actually the first time in my life that I had someone else work on my car. I'm a happy camper now that I know the shaft and clutch will probably not fail on me the next 40.000 miles! |

I did the same last year. I considered doing it myself, but decided it was going to be too much hassle for the sake of paying someone £350 in labour. |

The 70'th is basically a complete Range Rover sport drive train shoe horned into a Defender. |

I was just looking at this on IRB page on FB, quite disturbing! Interesting that IRB fit OEM shafts in 90% of situations, with correct grease and only Ashcroft shaft in 10%.
Should get mine back Wednesday all going well. It probably just depends what the customer is willing to pay and asks for.
The Ashcroft kit actually contains a genuine shaft and cup as I remember, it just has a slot spark eroded into it to let the oil through. Then a specially made housing to keep the oil in. The grease would probably work if it's thick enough and the cover to keep the water out and grease in is up to the job. I went for the Ashcroft kit as it was more of a belt and braces approach I thought. |
