Yep, it’s just a slightly different simpler version of your phone screen.
I added a mud glove box to mine. And popped the usb wire into there.
Hidden away and easy to fit. The glove box has been described in here loads. Took half an hour max and was really really easy, but a great mod to do.

So presumably the USB plugs into the rear of the unit then the wire threads through to where you want it to dangle?

If that’s correct, the downsides I can see are that for a start there is a dangling cable but more worrying is that when the cable breaks (as they do) and needs replacing, you have to remove the facia to plug the new usb in – or am I misunderstanding?

Hi Amdy
I'm sfraid I'm not really sure how to help you or even that your concern has any validity. There needs to be a lead to connect your phont to the stereo. Car play doesn't work over wifi/bluetooth.

On mine there is a USB extension running from the back of the stereo to the glove box.. This is to allow you to use either an apple connection or a samsung one. (We use both occasionally)
If you break this then yes you'd have to take off the facia and replace the lead, but at least it's just a lead and not the stereo you'd need to replace. Also only takes 2 ,minutes leterally
Wether it's dangling or not is up to you. Mine is nicely tied in and secure at the back of the stereo and through a gland on the glove box.
I then have a 10cm apple lead connected to this so the wire length is minimal.

Thumbs Up

OK, I misunderstood – I thought you meant you had the (notoriously crappy) apple lead plugged into the back of the stereo, but you have a male to female USB plugged in which makes more sense and I hadn’t thought of.

HI Mev

If youære installing it yourself I'd definitely recommend the half depth models. Fitting it is a breeze. Took me an no time to complete my installation. hardest bit was gathering the pateince to cut the dash for the switch panel.

If youre happy unging google/apple/waze maps on your phone, then the best units with Apple car play / Android audio are the:

JVC unit from Mudstuff (JVC KW-M745DBT)
Kenwood (DMX7018DABS)

Both of these are realy fance. cost the same at about £400 (They are the same unit in reality) Look great installed. they both have no buttons but allow you to touch the screen. They also have a background you can change to a landrover one (or alternative) screen.

If you want satnav built in the price goes up. A lot.... and the units are all full depth double din units so you need to push and move a few bits behind the stereo. Again the kenwood unit DNX716WDABS is great but you can get them that have a DVD player in them too. Screen folds out for access and can also tilt for better viewing angle.

For me, I know where i'm going 99% and if not i plug in my phone with Google maps downloaded offline. I did the glovebox conversion and just keep my phone in there.
It's good as you know you always have the latest map and it shows live traffic info and soon will show speed cameras. Plus it's free.

Total cost for my setup was £400 for head unit.
£30 for a rear view camera
£250 for the double din fascia (Defender upgrades)
£20 for a DAB stereo splitter

Total of £800 and a few hours graft to completely change the look of the interior.

Keep us updated on what you decide to go for.

Hi

Can I ask what splitter you went for? Was it just a simple cable, or one of the ones with a powered box?

TIA

I may well regret it, but opted for a single DIN pop out unit (after reading many threads with all the pros and cons etc).

So far very happy with my Pioneer AVH-Z7100DAB.

Only time will tell...

I’ve replaced the facia and fitted a double din stereo, the only issue I have now is the clock doesn’t fit! It’s bottoming out on the top of the stereo.
Anyone else had this problem? Or know of a simply drop in clock to fill the whole?

Cheers

Most people shave off a bit of plastic from the clock body to make it fit - use a Dremel or similar tool.
