I've spent some of today prepping and painting something for a future project:
Click image to enlarge In between coats, I spent a few minutes applying a few stickers. Firstly, something to break up the blandness of the wheel cover: Click image to enlarge There was a high degree of faffing with masking tape and a tape measure for that one. Then, a bit of colour for the front wings: Click image to enlarge All good fun Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? Thanks for the tip on the festoon LEDs... just bought a set too. 👍
Have just fitted a cheapo set last week but they are such a harsh white colour I cant live with them. |

So, today was the day for a project that I've been collecting bits for for a little while, which was a 'retro' front end inspired by my old Stage 1 V8:
Click image to enlarge I picked up a couple of Series headlight surrounds some time ago (one from an autojumble and another from JeremyJ of this parish), which I'd cleaned up and sprayed satin black. However, the little horn louvres on the headlight panels of later models means that just swapping to the earlier surrounds would leaving gaping holes in the front panels. Shamelessly pinching an idea from forum member JWL, I therefore adapted a couple of standard headlight surrounds by cutting them to received the Series parts and painting them to match the body colour. This picture was taken part way through the process, which saw them plastic primed, regular primed, given a couple of coats of Orkney grey from a rattle can, flatted off and finished with clear lacquer: Click image to enlarge I picked up a good, used set of Wipac crystal headlights to fit whilst I had it all in bits: Click image to enlarge And some stainless mounting rings, although I discovered that the original headlights also had a set fitted: Click image to enlarge And then, finally, a stainless, powder coated mesh grill kit: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Oh and a bag of plastic Loknuts to complete the fixings for the Series surrounds. The grill kit is very nicely made and comes with comprehensive instructions. It's the same as the one supplied by Defender Upgrades but was significantly cheaper direct from the manufacturer via eBay, Lockwood International. Included in the kit are six plastic fir tree plugs for the holes in the grill frame that are left when the original grill is removed. As supplied, they're black but as I had the paint, I decided to prep and spray them Orkney grey so that they don't stand out so much: Click image to enlarge With the existing front panels removed, the new headlights were fitted and the extra Loknuts inserted: Click image to enlarge To protect the newly painted plastic headlight panels, I fixed closed cell foam to the rear of the side and indicator light plinths: Click image to enlarge The new grill is secured to the frame with little stainless steel 'L' shaped brackets and matching nyloc nuts and Allen bolts. The only deviation from the fitting instructions was that the two lower brackets were fitted backwards as they sat more flush with the surround: Click image to enlarge The finished result is exactly what I hoped it would be: Click image to enlarge The headlights are also really good (I've had these before on other Land Rovers) but will eventually be fitted with a custom made relay loom. Click image to enlarge And a wider view to give the full effect: Click image to enlarge Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? It's good to see the series and later surrounds together, not seen that before. Be interesting to see what it looked like all in Orkney Grey rather than the bits of black. James

I think this is one of those times that the phrase 'each to their own' was invented for Mind you, at least that one has the correct colour of indicators Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing?
