Oooh, Mr. Jackal himself. My all time favorite movie (as well a Frederick Forsyth’s book it is based on, which every so often I will read again without getting bored). Raining here today, so you just gave me an idea to watch this dvd once again this afternoon. Eric You never actually own a Defender. See Eric, there is a true Englisman in you, trying to get out. Forsyth, Day of the Jackal, Defender...next you'll be telling us you have Marmalade on Toast every morning, accompanied by a warm beverage based on an infusion of leaves from the Indian Subcontinent, brewed to a precise temperature and served in the finest bone china with a dash of milk or a slice of lemon. We ALL do that in England, don't let anyone try and convince you otherwise!! Monsieur Le Grenadier

I am everything you say there, except for the dash of milk and the slice of lemon. Having travelled extensively professionally for more than 30 years to the USSR, later that became Russia, Ukraine and all the -stan FSU countries means that I drink my tea just black. I could write it here in Cyrillic, but I’m a real “chorny chai” fan you know. Otherwise it sounds like I have something with you Brits, yes. I even go as far as buy real fresh milk tomorrow for our English guests we will have at our house this weekend. But when that dash of fresh milk goes into the teacup, I briefly look away.
Oh, I obviously have a few green oily coats, 30 years old which will stay with me forever. Did you say I have something British over me? Eric You never actually own a Defender. Lovely no? Have done that dozens of time. Overnight trains, business class, cheap as chips, so I usually bought tickets for an entire sleeping compartment just for myself. Those night trains always arrived at destination exactly on time, not difficult as average speed is barely 40/50 kph. And with several half hour stops to make up for eventually lost time.
Best part always was the piva, chorny khleb, and krasny ikra in the restaurant car. Eric You never actually own a Defender. If that photo was taken in the UK, the hair and uniform would have comfortably given away the decade as the 80s. With it being Russia, who knows, could have been yesterday Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

It is still like that today, not just yesterday.

As usual have visited our motor show earlier this week. I was wondering how it would be different now that some of the major car brands for cost saving reasons have opted to stay away. JLR, Ford, Volvo, Mini, Opel are amongst this years absentees.
I heard that JLR participation to this show alone came at a cost picture of about 15M CHF, or more than 11M £. With their poor production results, lack of interesting news, and not so good financials, understandable that they are trying a different approach. Apparently they intend to stay away from all major motor shows, and refocus their marketing on web based and smaller private lauch events. Tonight for instance, our local dealer is holding a private dinner and entertainment event where also the new Evoque will be highlighted. We will attend with the SVX, the real stuff. Time will tell if that new marketing approach will work, or if after some time JLR will need to come back to the car shows. In any case, my impression was that the show was very well organised, and the absentees did not really leave a noticeable void. Here follows a little flavor of my show impressions. The space traditionally occupied by JLR each and every year was now occupied by three different less known brands of something (I did not even bother to check them out). And in the forefront you see Mazda cars, their Japannoboxes occupying the space traditionally occupied by Volvo. Click image to enlarge We'll come back to Defenders later, but here a selection of other cars of my liking. The new Morgan, not really a classis, but I love them. Click image to enlarge Some real classics selection then Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge And being in Geneva in March, obviously some suggestions to go skiing in style. I favour the blue one. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Not that I like this, but Startech who were one of Germany's top Defender outfitters and who in the past on behalf of JLR had to rekit in quite tasteful ways several Defender limited series for Germany and for Switzerland, like for instance the Black Pearl edition, or the Blaser and Hunter editions, now are refocusing on other brands and models. Like this here. Click image to enlarge And finally we get to the real Monty. The Defenders that were still on show. First two from Twisted, a white 110 V8 (6.2L LS3), and a black 90. Have been chatting a bit with them, and apparently they still have a stock of about 40 of these for sale. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge And then there were the Chelsea gang. The yellow one still looked ok from the back, but for the black one I could not find any angle to take a picture which would make it look half decent. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge So, all in all a nice show, hopefully next year JLR return with the new Defender. This has got to be one of the most hideous Land Rovers I've ever seen! It can't possibly be legal with the headlights in the middle, either.
