Giving this some more thought are we realy suprised.200 and 300 tdi clutch arms failed before clutch and TD5 release bearings noisey.
Why oh why don't Land Rover pay attention to detail.Well atleast we haven't got an electric hand brake Evil or Very Mad

Interesting thread.

My 07MY Puma had the whole clutch mechanism replaced at 42k miles. Clutch, flywheel, slave cylinder and master cylinder - i don't know the details other than the receipt for the work done, as it was before I aquired the vehicle.

Thanks,

The point is two fold...land rover dont make the clutch and the tests (certainly if its an engine problem) wont cover this sort of real world issue. Mike

Have done a few motorway miles this week and like Andrew says with his around 60 mph it goes lumpy mine has always done it from new originally thought it was something out of balance like a wheel or the propshaft but not sure now my 130 has the latest updates as well Neutral i also get like a surging in low reves when going up a rough track in 1 st or 2 nd which wont do the clutch any good Pete saidhe might be able to tune it better but if he can why can,t Land Rover do it Shocked

Had a close look the friction plate and found this.

The grey area is not the cover plate of the spring cage, but the splined hub which rotates and it is blocked by pushing the coils.

So there are 2 different spaces in the hub, 2 which already touch a pair of opposite springs and a 2 which are far far from any spring end leaving a pair of springs totally loose.

Looks like some sort of progressive mechanism. The problem would arise if the "tight" springs are of bad quality. Puma 110" SW

Hi all!

Had the clutch of my 08/09 changed after 25.000 km, because of the loosen springs, after that (now with 45.000 km) it seems to be ok, but i'm afraid to have to change again.

About the "rough" of the engine, I don't belive that this could be causing this problems, I think that the springs don't hold up the big torq of the engine, it's very easy to solve this problem, only just need a little of goodwill of LR.

If we stop and think in old diesel engines, how rough it were and how much clutch fail did occur???

It is not an easy job. Basically there is no room for thicker springs as they would touch the flywheel. And if there was any, then the friction plate would start to slip. And to avoid that then you would need to have a friction plate with bigger surface and replace the pressure plate and then.......better to get a vehicle which is not a mix between a pig and a parrot.

Some builders use rubber "studs" instead of coil springs.

Bottom line: this engine was not developed for the Defender. Puma 110" SW

Just returned from the French Alps, waiting for LRA to come out and collect J-Lo.

The symptoms described in the posts above relating to J-Lo have never been resolved. However I think that whatever the issue is has has finally reached a point that it must now be discoverable.

Symptoms are
Very noisy injectors, the rattle noise they make from cold is constant.
When you shut off or slow down (over run situation) the vehicle kangaroos violently.
There is a hell of a metallic rattle from the transmission when the above is occurring.

I will keep you posted 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile

Mick - I get the surging on an incline problem - no clutch issues and dealer says that my truck is due a ECU mapping update. My truck is an 09 plate so not sure if the map and the surge are linked to one particular software version but from what you're suggesting a later map isn't going to cure the problem.

When I raised this problem elsewhere on the forum the replies suggested checking and cleaning the MAP sensor - which I did as it was covered in oily residue - this seemed to help but didn't cure the problem altogether. It's going into the dealers soon for its 2 year check over so will report back if anything found
