First car, back in 1974, was a 1962 model Citroën 2CV, bought from a chap for the formidable sum of €50,00.
Instead of a fuel gauge it had a steel wire attached to the fuel cap, so you could measure the fuel remaining in the tank like you measure the engine oil level still today I have driven it through mud, wet grassland, snow ,etc. and it ploughed through all that not unlike a Defender today Power from the 425cc engine was about 20hp +-20% or so , top speed was about 90km/h, fuel consumption about 7 litres/100km, and in my first year driving, I covered a total of about 19.000km in it without any problems, have taken it that summer all the way down south to Les Saintes Maries de la Mer in the Camargue and back north. After this 19.000 trouble free cheap km it dropped to a sudden death. Not bad for a €50,00 investment I think You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Ford Cortina MK V bought from my sister when they moved to the states ABP462V when I was a student
just like a Land Rover it was a crossover between IV & V and had a mixture of parts. Then when I had my first job I bought my first LR the Perkins engined SIIa 109 Safari APG490H from PRBs in Leeds. (I had always frooled of LRs since my matchbox lwb Safari when i was 6) Loved the 95 Zag, always did, been a great SAAB lover too which started when my dad brought home a brand new 99GL two weeks before I passed my test and then threw me the keys and told me to go off on my own (once I had passed of course) He who dies with the most toys wins Defender 90 & 110, S1 80", Disco 1, S111 88 LRSOC & CVLRC |

My first and the one I learnt to drive in was a Ford 100E van - even though only a year or two old, much cheaper than the equivalent car. As soon as I’d passed my test, I bought a Humber Super Snipe, quite a difference.
This was in the early 60s and to coincide with the James Bond films the must-have accessory of the time was stick-on bullet holes (nothing changes, today you’re not a real man if your truck doesn’t have stick-on chequer plate). Seemed a bit naff, so one of the lads blasted the back doors of my van with a sawn-off. Greatly enhanced my street cred, but I was forever after being stopped by the police and having to explain it… Peter |
