true... but as far as I can tell, not all the same design. My "original" LR-shaped one seems quite few and far between (except on LR adverts). It would be interesting to hear from people with this same design driving fast in hot countries... I know - very unlikely Laughing

At 80 mph, I'm guessing aerodynamics/airflow are pretty important. I don't seem to get any power loss pulling at lower speeds...

Have they changed the design then? If so then I guess there could be something to it, although I wouldn't expect temperature to have such a dramatic effect - the difference in air density at 35C and, say, 25C is only around 3 percent, which the turbo would more than make up for. The 'draw' on a diesel engine is considerable, so if your RAI were so restrictive that it's strangling it at speed then it would do it regardless of air temperature.

The simple test to discount it (or otherwise) would be to take the top off and see if it still suffers. Darren

Hmmm - the turbo is still whistling a bit (has to go back to the dealers again). I'm now putting my money on the MAF freaking out at high intake temperatures. Changing the MAF and getting a Scangauge should answer some questions Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

I got MAF related errors and it was not the MAF itself...... Puma 110" SW

I said it a thousand times allready.............

Manifold intake temps are too high. Thus the air from the turbo after it passed through the intercooler. It has nothing to do with RAI or filters or what ever els.....

Here in Africa, the okes that actualy fixed the issue did the following:
- Bigger intercooler
- Silicone turbo hoses
- De-Cat, and (if you realy want to...)
- Remove center scilencer.

Easy as that!

Confused
Regard: yup - bigger intercooler seems to fix most power problems Thumbs Up

One more thing occurred to me (so thick I didn't think of it before) - in Winter when I forgot to undo my radiator muff (i.e. completely covering the intercooler) I had a very similar loss of power on the motorway. Of course, it might not be the same problem... but if it is then the air intake temperature (and not total airflow) would be the more likely issue. Hopefully the Scangauge will help Smile

It's going to be another scorcher today so I've switched to the new MAF (the "old" one will be my "new" reserve) and we'll see what happens there... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Let us know what happens! Thumbs Up

In my experience a new MAF as well as new MAP did not make any difference.

How do silicone hoses help on this matter? Puma 110" SW

Ohhh.... not to sure exactly but is has to do with not being affected by the heat as much as normal hoses(not as much dilatation under pressure and heat) as well as the delamination issue......???

Not the MAF!

At 35 degrees the other day power dropped at 125 km/h
It was a bit cooler today at 30 degrees (!) and I managed to go a bit faster but there was still loss of power at 135 km/h.
I was up at normal 145+ km/h this morning - it was only about 20 degrees then.

So I'm guessing it's "just" a temperature thing at the moment - seems to get rapidly worse above 30 degrees.
At least I don't think my engine is dying.
Funny though - I don't remember having it last Summer before I fitted the RAI but perhaps it never got that hot Confused

Pity I can't just "try out" a bigger intercooler before I buy one... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

ZeDefender, How have you overcome the Speed Limiter of 82 mph/130 kph ? A remap ?

Maybe that is why there is a power drop. The remap allows you to travel faster BUT the intercooler etc: are not able to cope with speeds in excess of the normal set limit under all environmental conditions. Do you have this problem if you keep to 130 or less kph ? Even in hot conditions ? Whistle LANDYWATCH

Nope - just to be certain I have been using the standard LR map for a few days now with a very nice hardware unlimiter from Matzker.

I stopped using the remap a few days ago when I first thought there might be a problem (not with the remap, with the 110). Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

I have a remap on but had the exact same issue before remap. Infact, I did the remap to see whether there will be any change.........but there is no change what so ever!

Laughing

So did you solve your problem with a bigger intercooler? If so, did you decat at the same time?
I can't decat here in Germany - the TÜV would have me for breakfast Shocked
So I'm trying to find the relative importance of each option to avoid wasting money Thumbs Up

I'm also eagerly awaiting my ScangaugeII so I can check the manifold temp...

p.s. does it really happen as low as 30 degrees with you? Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Mine is still under waranty at the moment but as soon as it runs out in September that will be the first thing I do. Like I mentioned Jaguar Land Rover is well aware of this issue and is bussy with investigations with bigger intercoolers here in RSA.

So I am just worried that I buy an intercooler and a month later there is a "recall"?

I spoke to 4 different owners around South Africa who did get the intercooler upgrade and all of them reported a huge improvement in warm weather!

Infact, I spoke to the technical head at Land Rover SA who was part of the international investigation on this intercooler issue(his Defender also have an upgraded intercooler now) and he also said there is huge improvements!
