parking brake lurch
Hi all.

Has anyone made or bought a hand brake that works on both rear wheels rather than the prop, thus removing the lurch as the trans backlash is taken up?

I was thinking initially to have a hydraulic and cable caliper like on astras but then thought about a complete stand alone cable caliper on a new bracket. The other advantage being they could be set as fiddle brakes too to aid traction in extreme terrain.

Any thoughts? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

for fiddles to work they need to be hydraulic really, which isin't ideal for MOT on a park brake.

i am not aware of any park brakes for rear discs on def. Cheers

After replacing an electronic park brake on a Disco 3, I hope they never appear on a defender !!!

You could fit a hydraulic valve on the brake circuit so that the existing footbrake retains its pressure (similar to the MECH LOCK, see http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/Meck_Lock.shtml).

This will apply the brake on all four wheels. Keep the standard handbrake as well.

I have to admit that I am not entirely clear what the issue is with the standard handbrake though, since with the right technique it is possible to avoid any run-back anyway (just keep the slack tight on the transmission by using the clutch as you apply the handbrake).

The issue comes with hitching the big trailers. Will look into a line lock. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Whilst they are far more efficient than the factory drum they are still a transmission brake and they still lurch as the trans slack is taken up. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
