How ironic that modifications, which once made it hard to insure a Land-Rover, should now make it easier!

Perhaps I'll fit that RR Griffon engine after all! Rolling with laughter

I know Laughing however modifications are suited for the specialist market, of which insurers are limited in numbers in comparison to the standard market, but specialist insurance policies are designed around the enthusiast market and therefore standard cars don't fit their schemes unless the car itself is considered specialist (high performance vehicles, kitcars, track cars, classics, American etc).

The niche/Enthusiast market has come along way over the years - but standard insurers still remain focused on standard models of vehicles in general. The likes you see on comparison sites are predominantly what you'd describe as standard insurers, and very few of them have the facilities to insure non-standard. Howden Insurance - Specialist Vehicle

Spent 20mins on the phone to A-Plan yesterday for them to turnaround and state we cant insure your modified 2007 TD5 Defender.

The below is not true.

Have gone to Flux.

2014-2016 Defender owners are actually all being hammered by the fact that 2014-on *keyless* LR and RR vehicles are being stolen in huge numbers.

The fact that the classic Defender is NOT keyless isn't being factored in by underwriters, all LR products are being refused cover or the premium hiked.

Pre 2014 and classic defenders are still ok to insure if modified for off-roading or show an enthusiast risk profile (something insurers do look at which is mentioned in the above comment). The standard ones, which are more likely to be like the ones seen left with minimal security at a train station as exampled by Gal Dove are the one's that are becoming hard to insure. Because specialist insurers know if you're putting money into modifying your car or minimal mileage because its mostly used at shows and events - you're more likely to look after it and not treat it as a standard commuter vehicle.

" I think that it would be more helpful if some insurers could get more of a 'feel' for the car owners and their attitudes to such risks, their recent/past history & claims, where they live, etc "
This is exactly what they have been doing - but unfortunately the theft claims stats speak for themselves and they can't keep paying out more than they're taking in premiums or they just wouldn't survive - so the answer is for those insurers with higher loss ratios is to revaluate what they can/can't insure.

It might not have been true for you and your circumstances.

Insurance is an odd business with so many factors that make up the decision and premium.

At the end of the day, LR has done a p155 poor job with the security of its vehicles that some insurers won't insure them. As a broker, APlan can only reflect that.

As an example, I had no problem insuring my 17 year old daughter's 2008 D3 that lives on the road. Confused Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

Ouch! Sad

Something’s going to have to change! I’d say that this presents a great business opportunity for a proper insurance company who are willing to take the extra time to consider the individual’s circumstances and then make an informed decision. As previously stated, it appears that the insurance world have just taken their big brush and tarred us all with the same [keyless] Censored that JLR are more recently churning out!!

Hi Rich,
It is true.
Sorry we were unable to help you this year. Risk profiles are a combination of factors and insurers have different appetites - unfortunately it sounds like we didn't have anything for your risk profile, this doesn't mean we can't insure any modified 2007 TD5 Defender.
Again, apologies we couldn't help but I'm glad you found an alternative

Just to add this doesn't mean that your risk profile is good/bad, just that on this vehicle and combination of factors didn't fit our insurer panel's criteria at this time. Howden Insurance - Specialist Vehicle

Thanks for the feedback - as above we don't have access to one of our main 4x4 schemes as the insurer is undergoing some administrative changes, so we have removed our advertising on the site for the time being.

glad you found an alternative to suit - hopefully we'll be back up and running with a full bank of schemes very soon.

I've just renewed the 1990 110 with Howdens on a classic policy (no longer with Markerstudy) and it's gone down 20%! Very pleased! Thumbs Up James

I was on the 'phone to A-Plan (Howdens) for a good 30 minutes today before they told me they couldn't renew my Defender which had been insured with them for 8 years. They did say they could insure the vehicle if I removed all non factory modifications (PITA) but there would be a price hike of over £200. I went to Adrian Flux and got the vehicle insured with my modifications left intact with a price increase of £105 over last year. Defender 90XS SW

How does one qualify for a classic policy? My 110 is only used for low miles, no commuting etc. but never been offered a classic. Is it too new being an ‘07? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
