Looking at the amount of oil that has leaked out overnight I think I will be pushing for a new transfer box. It also looks like the seal on the rear diff may also be leaking, no problems before the recall, but I can't confirm that due to the amount of oil that has sprayed everywhere.

I will let you know how I get on.

Quick update.

Told not to drive vehicle until LR Assist have had a look. Dealer is concerned that the transfer box may seize.

Assist coming at 6am Shocked Tuesday and vehicle will be either driven or recovered to dealer.

Vehicle at dealers now, driven in after LR assist checked transfer box oil level and deemed OK to drive - have the written evidence for later use if needed !

New transfer box seal replaced as part of the recall was faulty and failed after 20 miles.
Seal being replaced, transfer box has been checked and is ok.

Somehow the rear diff seal was damaged whilst doing the recall, new seal arrives Wednesday.

How the hell did they manage to knacker the diff seal? Makes you wonder if the first transfer box seal was faulty or they made a cods ear of it. Steve.

I think the latter ! All I know is that they did take the rear prop off, new bolts front and rear, probably used a club hammer to put it back on and destroyed both the seals.

They appear to be now. They used to be exceptional but the standards have slipped recently - I did see them advertise for mechanics a short while ago so my guess is all the best ones have moved on. The dealer principal knows that I don't call LR customer service, I go directly to the executive office, so I am sure it will be OK when it comes out - famous last words !

All fixed Thumbs Up

The new seal fitted to the transfer box under the recall was faulty and they have no idea why the diff seal started to leak as well.

Guess they would never own up to a bodged job so we will never know the truth.

mine went in yesterday.
new seal, re-fitted brake shoes.
i also asked them to check on a conk when changing gear. diagnosed as loose bolts/nuts on the brake drum. clonk now gone and the drive is smooth again.

so far no signs of an oil leak - i will keep checking, my drive was/is clean of drips so it should be easy to check if it starts leaking Confused BM52

Recall Notice: P022 Park Brake Oil Contamination

Date of Issue: 22nd February 2011

VIN Range: LD066843 – LD071690 (CKD) LD730411 – LD823248

A concern has been identified with the park brake fitted to 2007-2011 Defender vehicles. Any vehicle repaired under Recall Action P019 prior to the revised repair procedure identified in bulletin P019v4 must be recalled and repaired under this campaign. The shoes of the parking brake could be contaminated with oil which has leaked from the rear of the transfer box. Where oil from the transfer box has impregnated the park brake shoes, the park brake may not hold the vehicle when the park brake lever is applied and the vehicle may instantaneously roll. Transfer box oil contamination of the park brake shoes and brake drum leads to a loss of friction between the brake shoe lining and the brake drum friction surface such that the park brake drum when engaged will not hold the vehicle stationary on a gradient.

Action to be taken:
Land Rover has taken the decision to recall affected vehicles to remove the output shaft flange, clean the splines, apply Loctite 648 and where necessary and the brake shoes will also be replaced.

I logged into Topix and says my car has this announcement... Does this work get carried out free of charge even if outside of warranty?

Cheers
