Following on from Payney1000's comment about work being sent to India to protect TATA locally, I heard somewhere that some/many of the V6/V8 diesel crakshaft failures (e.g. Range Rover, Disco) happened to Indian made crankshafts. True? False? I don't know, but worth considering.
When the weather improves I'll be crawling under my MY2011/110 to look at the axle. |

It seems the DVSA are not doing their job, surely they can’t think a catcher bracket is a proper engineering solution. The fact it is called a catcher bracket should raise major engineering concerns to them, else all vehicles would be fitted with catcher brackets.
They should be saying a major component that affects the steering of the vehicle is known to be inadequate and therefore needs replacing with one that is fit for purpose. Else they are saying it’s ok to build a vehicle where the axle will snap as long as the wheel is caught when it does. How can they justify that !!!!! |

Best cast steel from TATA in India, I imagine.
It would be useful if someone could have a serious accident on a vehicle fitted with the brackets to evidence that even with the brackets the vehicle is unsafe if the axle fails. |

I think he might to say
"It would be useful if someone had had an accident with the axle fitted with the brackets, if they could post it here." Or something along those lines. Actually someone did at low speed but I cannot locate it at the moment. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Sadly not, just cynical.
I was once told quite seriously by a local council employee that there was no possibility that the local authority (Wimbledon) would consider installing a zebra crossing on a dangerous and difficult-to-cross road because "not enough people have been killed trying to cross". Sadly I don't believe that JLR will take this axle fault seriously unless there is a high profile and newsworthy accident as a result. A shocking abdication of responsibility. My wording was poor, my sentiment was cynical. No offense was intended. |

What Blackwolf has mentioned above with the zebra crossings anology is on the same lines to what JLR service stated to me when I visited their office with my concern and the EU alert in my hand. Not enough failures 🤬 Just shows the arrogance in JLR culture. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

It seems JLR are stuck in the 60's culture where IIRC Ford wrapped some rubber round the fuel tank of the Pinto and called it the rear bumper, then when they realised the mistake, did a calculation on the cost of a redesign / recall against the cost of paying out for cremating a few peasants, sorry important customers and their loved ones....

I wonder if any of the small number of TDCi Defenders in the world running Tibus portal axle conversions have MIG-welded axles? I imagine that that would tend to break them!

Locally the wise guys dump their axles and get some proper Y61 ones. There is a good reason for that. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Have people forgotten how to use wing mirrors? Seriously though. Ford are issuing a recall because the rear view camera "could" fail. You would think that a potentially faulty axle would be a more critical issue than the rear view camera. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Reading that Ford recall its either a relatively 'free' software update or a quick job of flicking a little camera out of its housing and refitting a new one, then passing the cost back to the supplier of the camera.
The potential cost of changing the front axle and LR having to absorb that themselves plus then the argument with every owner over a courtesy 4x4, 'oh you need new brakes, new bearings, new bushes etc' would be the stuff of nightmares - no wonder they're trying to slope shoulders.....Bar stewards! |
