does anyone know the part number for the brackets

LR068818 LH bracket, LR068822 RH bracket. Regular price c.50 each but there is at least one pair on eBay at present for c.30 each.

I've just bought a pair for my '07 for peace of mind.

This MUST be raised with Landrover, since it is possibly the first case of a Defender 90 suffering the same problem as was recalled for 110 and 130 vehicles. There are wide implications. It is exactly the same failure as was recalled for the larger vehicles, a failure of the weld at the left hand flange.
The clear implication is that there are potentially many Defender 90s on the roads which could suffer a similar failure.

I have no doubt at all that the OP will already be raising it very adequately - I know that I would be.

Land Rover are well aware of the issue. The fact that they have only technically issued a recall for 110/130 vehicles doesn't mean that they don't know it also applies to 90 models - I guarantee they are not that naïve. The axle casing is the same across all models, and they will know which ones are affected. This will include 90s, however I suspect they felt that the risk was lower with those (for whatever reason) and so didn't include them in the recall. Same kind of thing as how they will replace the axle casing on a vehicle fitted with HD suspension, but only fit a bracket bodge to one without - it's an assessment of risk given the likely usage pattern of the vehicle.

So given the above the only reason to go back to Land Rover would be to either A. claim a new axle (which they're not going to do as the OP is not covered by the recall and has already carried out his own repair - voiding any implied 'warranty') or B. claim some kind of recompense or compensation (again, they will just fob you off).

It's still worth telling them, should someone else then have an accident as a result of a failed axle on a 90, they can't then turn around and say they've never come across any failures on 90's. They could obviously still try, but then someone at VW also said they weren't aware of emissions cheat devices....

It maybe that out of a batch of axles they discovered to be faulty they all went onto 110's and 130's. It's quite possible they just had a period where they didn't build any 90's. Lets say they order batches of axles to last them for a day's build and on that given day they didn't build any 90's. Or it's possible the only complaints they received were for 110's and 130's, so it was then assumed that the welds on the dud batch of axles were still strong enough for 90's with their lower weight.

They may well have already had 3 or 4 complaints from owners of 90's but are waiting to see if they get one more before they trigger a recall. I would assume they have a trigger level, they're not going to spend hundreds of thousands on a recall for the sake of one complain, but maybe they do once they get 5, 6, 10, for all we know they've already had 9 and one more forces them to act.

To just say oh well i wont get anything out of it so i wont bother telling them, is in my opinion a very selfish attitude to have.

i'm surprised no one is selling them as extra re-enforcements or under guards anyway. To go with diff guards, steering guards, under trays etc. Very Happy

After a couple of weeks talking to various people at JLR customer services I can honestly say they don't care / not interested.
90's are not in the remit of the recall end of story.

If I want to take it any further I can take it back to the dealer, have a new axle casing fitted at my expense and raise a quality warranty case that they would look at after inspecting the axle, as I have repaired it by grinding the original weld out and re-welding it properly they doubt that they would cover the costs especially as the vehicle is 5 yrs old and no longer a current model.

Turn your back customer service that is, in my mind.

I will take it back to the dealers and get them to stick their head under it and poss try to raise a quality claim before the work is done, I doubt this will happen.

Brighter news, I keep inspecting it every weekend with dye penetrant spray and my welds are looking good, I was dreading a crack appearing at the edge as I did hit it quite hard with the mig turned right up.

I will let you all know more as and when anything happens but I think the case is dead and if you have a 90 keep an eye on this and weld it up as soon as you see an oil leak even the smallest hint. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Shocking, really shocking, and sadly just what one would expect.

What is the purpose of these brackets: keep the broken end bolted to the axle casing or ro avoid the crack? Question Puma 110" SW

The brackets prevent the hub assembly coming right off if the axle fails. I fitted a pair this weekend!

This is really very poor of LR - just shows the contempt they feel for the defender and its drivers.

There are loads of recalls from other manufacturers in the press for much lower risk faults, perhaps these others faults the manufacturer involved can pass costs onto the supplier and the axle is a LR part and they would have to take all costs on the chin?

As another poster has said, lets hope no one is hurt if one fails, but if they are lets hope its the person who makes the final decision on the recall, that would be ironic!

I was just watching the travels of Leigh and Steph on Youtube
.
I've been following them for awhile, and their videos are very well presented.

Anyway right at the end of their most recent video in the mountains of Krgyzstan, this happened.......

It was snowing and icy, I'm glad their ok, but things could've ended far worse.
It still shocks me that LR, won't take responsibility for the poor quality of their product. Does someone have to die before they do anything?

Looks like the swivel housing, not the dodgy welding? Shocking

I am wondering if it was an aftermarket one or factory piece. Puma 110" SW
