Fwd LR Service Bulletin SSM38792 2.4 Puma Engine knock noise
Quote:
In the Land Rover GTR appears te following service bulletin issued some weeks ago:
Somebody with this trouble?

Regards

Title: 2.4 Puma Engine Knock Noise.
Type: LD - Defender - All Years - Special Service Messages - Engine
Name / Part No: SSM38792
Info Type: Service Bulletins
Version No: 1
Date Uploaded: 21 Jul 2008
Models: LD - Defender
Title: 2.4 Puma Engine Knock Noise.
Last Modified: 21-JUL-2008 09:44
Category: Engine
Symptom: 497000 Engine Noise

Content Issue: Heavy audible knocking heard on start up.
Cause: On start up oil pressures can cause the piston cooling jets, (PCJ), to latch into a zero flow condition. Due to hysteresis effect in design the jets do not unlatch until the engine is warm and the oil pressures lower again. During this time with no pressurized oil jet flow to the lower pistons / cylinder bores, overheat and scuff conditions / damage can occur.

Action: Replace the engine assy but ensure only engines post serial # ELD00080707063602 are used.
This condition will not occur on vehicles post assured Vin# 9A767162.
Engines post the info above are fitted with modified PCJ internal springs and this issue is now closed.

I had this really bad about four months ago, they put a new HP fuel rail on (third one i think) and told me it was sorted. Ever since it has been quite noisy but when I saw this I was well worried. As I have started sending legal letters to the dealers I jsut told them what I had read and Tuesday I got a phone call asking me what they coudl do to make the problem go away? I told them extended warranty, new engine and their promise they would look at the transmission issues agian. They have gone away to think about it!!! I don't hold out too much hope though.

It's not a recall, at present anyway, so I can only presume its advice to the dealer when a customer presents with this problem. And there must have been a significant number already to warrant this announcement and a modified engine from Ford.

I asked on the other forum whether this was a LR-specific affliction as you'd guess that otherwise many thousands of Transits and several London Taxis would be in for an engine transplant. Also, I wonder if there is any action we can take to avoid this problem arising - probably not, it's maybe just down to the specifics of your particular engine resulting in this happening... Trevor Wright

Indeed.

I wonder whether the moderator of this forum could approach the Press Office of Land Rover and request a formal statement on behalf of the customer base represented here. That would save a lot of speculation on our part. Or we could await a future issue of one of the specialist magazines who must by now have picked this up and be preparing some copy. Trevor Wright

I had another phone call form the dealers today, they are having a LR engineer from Lodge Land coming down to inspect my 110. Among other things he or she will be looking at the noisy engine (on start up). I don't know how hings will go and how receptive the engineer will be but I can only hope. At least they are doing something for the first time since November 07 when it started having problems. I have also ask for them to inspect and put in writting why the engine will accelorate for a few second on full throttle after I have taken my foot off. I know all others do this (so land rover tell me) and LR say is safe and surposed to do this but they have not put this in writting to me even though I have repeatedly asked for it.

I don't really hope for too much but I just don't want to let them off the hook to easly. When the results are done I will post them here as I seemed to have had most problems reported here, new clutch, new vacuum pump, oils seals on trasfer box, diff, gearbox, water in fuel, new pump, three new hP fuel rail, transfer box/gear box over heating, high fuel usage, I could go on for ever it seems.

well spoke to my dealer today
will pick up my 07 defender in the morning after new gear box as been fitted and clutch new type of clutch

sent them a copy email of ssm38792 and asked about my one they seem to be a bit fed up we have
access to this stuff Rolling with laughter

any way he reports back that my one is not knocking so will not need a new engine. Thumbs Up it did knock but that was the clutch problem not oil injectors. they just spent six weeks taking the top half of the engine apart down the the block level to fix oil leaks shame if the engine had to be replaced

it seem a few have had problems unless it making a noise on cold start up it never will

i seem to agree my one needed a new gearbox and two clutchs after 12k but not all 07 models have needed that so don't worry

Hi there,

I start the post in the other site and thank to that I discovered this site

That confused me is that the bulletin is almost public. (just you must paid some money to have acces to it), so I dont know why the dealers looks shocking when they saw it.

Also I spoke with my dealer today (after sent by e-mail the ssm38792 some days ago) but the things down here are quite slowly. The dealer sent my e-mail to Brazil in order to request informatio, but nothing happens yet Mad .

So here I am waiting for a statment that can be useful. I hope that you can get more information there.

By the way some time ago in a very cold morning during the start up the motor start to crank (not so heavily) like a misfiring of the pistons with loss of power.

We finally stop the car, waiting some seconds and startup again without any noise/trouble.

Should be a part of this problem?

Mine runs fine on start up from cold but when I press the accelerator there is a coarse engine knocking noise. Disappears once engine has warmed up . Already had a faulty fuel switch replaced under warranty !

Is this the same problem as posted above ?? Sad
