No problem
![]() As I said, I don't know one end of a gearbox from another ![]() Just replacing the shaft has resolved a lot of other issues, not being able to get out of difflock without lots of reversing etc, high/low selector not wanting to engage, clunky gear changes etc. It has raised another problem, I can only get into difflock in high, but that may have sorted itself and I will give it a try over the weekend. At least we have now identified the weak area, a result ![]() Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

in fact my bloods starting to boil the more I think about it....
whilst this has been deteriating and especially at the end there was quite obviously serious loads and I suspect damage caused to other parts........what happens when this parts give up after the warranty period due to the abnormal wear / loads that have been applied to them due to the above fault? ![]() |

It is the shaft that is the problem, the teeth wear away.
The transfer box has been used for many years and does not appear to be affected - mine has done some very heavy off road work since and is fine ![]() I did purchase an extra years warranty just in case, the bill to replace the shaft is £700 + ![]() Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

thanks Bob, that gives me some confidence.......
or does it? is the replacement an improvement over the origninal.....and if not what would cause it to fail and probably fail again? ![]() |

bob,
they've 'fixed' mine and as you've mentioned the gear change is sublime compared to the last couple of years? problem is the noise I experienced previously which to me sounded like engine pinking / injector chatter / dry bearings etc (and subsequently felt is was noise from the transmision) is back !! in terms of noise did you ever experience anything similar. take this morning - pottering along at 50mph in top no noise and then that rattling sort of noise (as above....sounding like fuel starvation / noisy bearings?) ![]() |

Only time I have had any metallic type of sound like that was minutes before the shaft died
![]() I would be tempted to get it back into the dealer and take them for a drive to let them hear the noise themselves. Could be something very simple like an injector relearn (which I did need doing a couple of years ago) - that gave a pinking type sound but the noise was coming from the front not the transmission area. thanks Bob.
done all that (injector learn etc). I've always thought it was the engine and then when the transfer box failed I assumed it was / had been this all the time - now I just don't know? I get this 'pinking' type noise at speeds as high as c1750 rpm........I have to admit that I probably use fewer revs than I should but I wouldn't have expected the engine to be struggling what so ever at 1750rpm (no trailer, no heavy loads, no excessive inclines)? just getting so peeved off with it all as the dealer doesn't think there's anything wrong? |

Stupid question time !
You have probably already answered this somewhere but what fuel do you use ? If I fill up with Shell fuel, normal or the go faster version, mine rattles like a good un ![]() The only thing that quietens it down is adding 2T but it still rattles. I now use Esso normal plus Millers and it loves it ![]() The real test I find is after doing 50 or 60 miles slow off road work, with Shell fuel it really does sound bad when I have finished, Esso is fine. Had to fill up at Tesco's once, never again as I needed ear defenders to deaden the sound ![]() The TD5 also hates Shell but runs fine on Esso without any extras but I believe TD5's are more tolerant of the poorer quality fuel we now have to put up with. One thing to note if you change fuels is that it will take a couple of tankfuls to clear the old stuff out of the system. Bob,
thanks for that reminder. last 3 months I've hardly used the car due to the 8 weeks of warranty work ! I will try the fuel plus 2so again as I seem to recall it did help. been using esso and redex for a while now. I'll let you know how I get on. - thanks for listening. ![]() |

![]() If you fancy a trip to Somerset I know a very good Indy who would have a look at it for you if the problem persists. I have trusted them to do all the work on my TD5 and am extremely pleased with the standard of their work and also their attitude - they listen to your concerns ![]() Keep us posted with any updates. The dealer is correct
![]() I was shown the bald shaft ![]() I think basically the fauty shaft, luckily, has acted like a sacrificial annode and destroyed itself leaving everything else intact. Easy way to think of it is that the faulty shaft is made of wood and everything else is made of steel. The wood shaft gives up as it is far softer than steel but the steel remains intact. In short, very poor design and choice of materials for this one shaft.
