That's an interesting point! Using "Halewood" as a keyword, I also just found a reference to some MT82s being made there ![]() Would be nice to think a bit more of mine was made in England... but it still feels Chinese :blub Off to investigate further ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

However is that the same cheesey LT 230 as in a TD5 made in England and to the original design specs or the new reduced cost version made in some contract manufacturers shed to minimum cost? If they are still made in England I would be pleasantly suprised, but it would be more of a mystery why some seem to be failing at very low mileages after all this part of it has been on the go for years and seemed to be relatively reliable in the past. |

Mind you if made at Halewood are all the parts forged and ground there, or imported from china and simply assembled over here. It's a bit like the old days in reverse where kits of Defenders would be shipped worldwide and assembled locally if parts are made overseas and assembled here..... |

It's probably commercially confidential if made in China, but probably happy to tell us if made here ..... ![]() |

Even in the old days I very much doubt LR themselves made much (if any) of the gearboxes. They would have been made in a proper old British machine shop though, with big heavy machines that are probably still going.
I suspect part of the problem is that the basic designs have changed very little, yet torque/power figures have probably doubled since the designs were done and the units are now running much higher utilisation factors. Add to that some cost-cutting and you've got a recipe for what's happened above. I'd love to help out but I'm 450 miles away and booked up this weekend. Hope you can get something sorted out. It seems the transplant of the Transit engine/drivetrain into the Defender has not been as well thought out as it should. Let's hope they have actually cleared this problem up on 2.2s (as I will probably be buying one one day). Or do they use exactly the same t/box? |

Sorry to hear about your issues Bob. I was looking forward to your experience of the Exmoor Challenge - hope you can still make it.
If they say that your transfer box is 'rubbery' and the part numbers match the takeaway menu i have here then definatly made in China. Check out this video re an ARB airlocker 'copy' Good luck Mark |
