There are only 2 faults on a Td5 that will put the MIL on. Throttle pedal (or its associated wiring) or Crank position sensor (or its wiring).

Only thing is, it wont pick up after 30 mph, gets very flat, and starts running very rough. Crank sensors i have seen fail on my dads jeep, those just cut out the car. But i wont rule it out if those can cause trouble. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator on the side of the block and the PCV valve next to the turbo? changing both made a massive difference to the flat spots on my TD5
