You are so right James. Not just time is required !
Spent a couple of hours cleaning the engine block. Quite a bit of deposits came out. I honed the bores... unfortunately some areas at the top end of the stroke did not hone so well - I have the 3 legged honer not the ball type. I hope still good, as did not want to hone too much. I cannot really feel a ridge, so should be ok for the rings. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge A bit of paint later, engine block looking nice again. Target was to get dirty today, so can spend some clean evenings playing with the bottom end of the engine. Some progress today.
Piston oil coolers installed. Crank installed on new shells and thrusts. Getting the rear bearing cap on was a bit of a fight without the proper guiding blocks for the T shaped seals.. but in the end got there. Rotating the crank found some 'hard spots' . Bit of head scratching later, found that the T seals on the rear bearing cap that still need trimming off fouling the crank... pheww. Still a few more parts to clean... but for now I will try to assemble whatever is already clean 😉 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

I would be the same way, can't beat the items being clean and then you can have a good look and then asses them 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

Thank you Black Puma. I am actually getting worried about the rush/no rush thing, as I already purchased the tyres
Bit more progress.. Getting the first piston ready to install. Pistons are not genuine. The genuine ones were quite expensive, and my reasoning was that if genuine crack, then might as well spend less.. and worse case is they crack as well and buy another set Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The timing case is almost ready to install. This timing case has 3 gaskets. One that goes around, to tentatively keep the oil in. There is another gasket just behind where the tensioner goes, and there is another gasket for the coolant. Strangely enough, they have different thicknesses... so very baffled. It is getting together. Looking more like an engine now... will not break any land speed records, but I will take good care of it, and it will get me there.
The sump has seen some better times... need a lot of TLC to get it look good again. That will be for another day. And will get the cover and bracket at back side of the injection pump painted at the same time. I had done the painting of the sump and a few small brackets, so Christmas afternoon while family was watching some movies, I entertained my self with this:
