I had a rare trip out today and felt the need to record for posterity that it had moved from my drive

The current need to keep connecting my Land Rover to a battery charger has finally pushed me to get my finger out and finish my towing electrics!
It was always my intention to fit a 13 pin socket in the hole in the rear cross member that’s designed for the purpose and to make my life easy, I began with a pre-wired socket: Click image to enlarge This will be fitted with M5 steel rivnuts to avoid bi-metallic corrosion, which was also an excuse to break out my rivnut tool that was actually bought for this job. I’ve had a more traditional hand riveter-type tool for years but the end-on design of this one makes it much easier to use in the confined space of the towing socket recess. Click image to enlarge The first job was to mask up the area to prevent any damage to the paint. I then positioned the new socket, marked the three fixing holes and drilled them out to 7mm to receive the rivnuts: Click image to enlarge I removed the tape from the inner area and gave the new holes a squirt of Dinitrol before setting the rivnuts. I also cleaned out the swarf from the drilling as I don’t want that rusting away in there. Click image to enlarge And with all of the rivnuts in place: Click image to enlarge I replaced the mild steel M5 bolts that came with the socket with some stainless Torx head bolts and gave each of them a coating of anti-seize paste before fitting: Click image to enlarge And with the socket fixed in place: Click image to enlarge The cable bundle was fed through the chassis and into the junction box that I installed when I fitted the receiver hitch back in September ’19 (I've been busy, ok?): Click image to enlarge Connecting up was straightforward with the use of the conversion chart that I’d created when I completed the first part of this job: Click image to enlarge And all closed up: Click image to enlarge Finally, a wider view of the finished socket. This is the best place for the towing electrics as it keeps them out of the way and well protected: Click image to enlarge It's now ready for me to connect my CTEK charger as soon as a 13 pin adapter arrives from the site shop! I'm going to stick a couple on top of the roof tent. |

Not really, to be honest. I don't particularly want a permanently fixed solar panel, nor the hassle of demounting it every time I want to use the vehicle. Plus the CTEK that I'm planning for can be easily swapped between my 110 and my wife's Discovery, which is parked alongside and has the same towing electrics. Following the collection of a large chip (I think acorn related!) and impending MOT, I had a new windscreen fitted this morning. No pictures unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions in the workshop. Still, I was pleased to see that the replacement is a Pilkington unit.
Notwithstanding the chip, a new windscreen is a lovely thing as they're sooo clear  Darren

A bit of a sad day today, as I removed my excellent CHEAPSKATE LED headlight bulbs and returned them back to halogen. The legality of these bulbs was always a bit ambiguous, which I was happy to accept as they'd passed last year's MOT without question. However, a recent change to the MOT SECTION 4.1.4 has now specifically made the fitting of LED bulbs in existing headlights to be a fail, so they had to go.
When I fitted the LED bulbs DETAILED HERE, I drilled two holes in each wheel arch liner for a cable tie to secure the LED driver gubbins. With that removed, I sealed the holes with duct tape to keep road crud out: Click image to enlarge With one side done, the difference is, well, obvious: Click image to enlarge I also changed the sidelight bulbs as whilst not strictly required, they'd look odd as white LED's. The bulbs I'm using are these uprated ones from Philips: Click image to enlarge I've used various incarnations of their uprated bulbs before, so I'm reasonably confident that these will perform well. Whether they'll be as good as the LED's is, of course, a moot point Darren

It is sad when you have to do this as the LED's are far much better but i just wish that someone / firm would make a proper LED oem replacement headlight for a defender

I bite the bullet and bought truck lites for mine. While i could find more holes in the law than Swiss cheese, sometimes it’s easier to pay extra.
