Thanks Clayton. Before I started the restoration I thought that it would be a quick respray over as the paint had turned into chaulk from the high UV we get over here. But since the paint was absorbing moisture, i had corrosion creeping under joints in panels.. which to get to needed a full dismantle. And the snowball become bigger and bigger. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

So decided to decouple the gearbox from the engine so that maneuvering the engine around could also be easier. I admit I was also more curious to know what the state of the clutch is. About year 2001, I had pulled the engine out because the clutch fork failed (as is common). That time the 90 was my only means of transport, so was a rather quick out and in job. Did not bother to check the clutch, but had replaced the thrust bearing with the new fork.
Since the 2001 operation, the clutch rattled occasionally, and also had a bit of judder when clutch was cold. Anyway, a few pics of the original clutch the 90 came with, stamped with 87 to confirm. Flywheel surface in remarkably good condition. Probably the pressure plate can last another round, but since I already have the kit, it will be replaced. Not the same for the springs in the friction plate. 😱 Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Good find there with the clutch and those springs
Most times it ends up that you do a load more than you would of ever thought on the landy's 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper. Clayton. |

So the right door is ready from painting. I am now awaiting for new waist seals to be delivered and will assemble before storing in a safe place while I do the front end of the 90.
In the mean time I cleaned and galvanized some small parts that go on the gearbox. Click image to enlarge And a good clean up of the gearbox to remove 32 years of grime. The gearbox will not be stripped. It feels okay. Minor wear on the output shaft splines, that I do not see that warrants a strip down to replace. It shifted smoothly, and was smooth before started the restoration. But it will get new seals on input and main shaft. I am curious of what are the paint markings on the side and a trace on the bottom of the gearbox, if anyone can shed some light to what they are. My guess is some kind of QC check. Very nicely done. Are you going to add sound proofing? Darren

Happy new year to all forum members, but a more special one to those that have contributed a lot into helping others. In itself, helping others, and just knowing that perhaps you made someone else happy in itself is already rewarding.
Thank you for all your positive comments. Lets see if 2021 can bring this restoration at least to a point that it is over 90% finished. I doubt if there will be a day that I can say it is 100% done heheee. To add or not to add soundproofing... will be a hard decision. I want it as stock as possible so most probably will only keep the soundproofing that LandRover installed in 1988. Actually all original soundproofing is in remarkable condition and want to keep and reuse. But I am also doing my best to keep everything as ‘tight’ as possible. For example, the door skins were re glued with a rather flexible polyurethane bond. I have installed new foam strips (just replaced the original) were the lock linkages pass to eliminate metal to metal ringing ( if that is the correct word). The doors have a very solid thud sound when I tap them with my finger tips. I hope they will sound solid as well when I install them back. I did make a mistake of ordering weather seal in a blue bag when I was stocking on parts.. and can really feel the profile being much stiffer to compress. Will probably have to replace with genuine weather seals when the time comes to marry the doors with the rest of the body. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
