Millie is of the road.
So to cut a long story to a shorter one Rolling Eyes

About a couple of weeks ago i started seeing more white smoke coming from the exhaust than normal, so i kept on checking the header tank and she was wanting more water each time, until the middle of last week when i started her up and she just had loads of white smoke, so i arranged for her to see my indie Saturday morning ( 11th ) so he could do a compression test, when starting her up from work to come home, very little white smoke.
Friday morning came and went out to start her to go off to work and she turned over, not even once and that was it, i had never had this before so i rang my indie and he told me what to do and hey presto she started, but sounding really ruff Sad
Straight to my indie, about 10-15 minutes away, not knowing whether she would make it, made it ok, phew i thought, so he told me that when i had tried to start her she had hydro-locked, not good, so he was able to make a start on finding the problem in between his other jobs, he did the compression test and number 2 cylinder was at 250 as the other 3 were at 325, he next took the head off, not just one visible crack but 3 Shocked head was scrap now, the reason for the ruff sound was that she had bent number 2 con rod big end and that made it impossible to take out without stripping all the bottom end.
So after sometime at work and a lot of head scratching a plan was made, my indie has a disco 300Tdi engine with a verified 165,000 miles on, so just run in then Laughing that will be going into Millie for now to keep her going and as the rest of the original engine is in really good condition, i will be getting it re-built. No time restriction on the re-build of the engine and then she will go back in Very Happy

I'm not at all disappointed about this as i knew it would happen sometime, she has done really well, the original engine, block, head, turbo and the injection pump had done nearly 382,000 miles, so a good innings Mr. Green 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

It's good that you've a plan to get it sorted, and stay mobile in the meantime, but still a hassle to go through. A very good innings I'd say for the original engine.

Is the indie doing the rebuild or have you a plan for that too? Donald

Yes it could be Donald a load of hassle if you let it but my glass is always half full, which helps, i was able/lucky to use the wife's car, yesterday and today as she needs it for her work so i'm picking up a hire van tomorrow for a week, which in that time i am hoping that i will have Millie back by then Thumbs Up

As my indie is very busy with work, i have some one else to do the re-build of the engine as they enjoy doing it Very Happy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

I don’t think the old engine owes you a penny!!

How many other cars would you just bang another engine into? Pretty everything else would just be scrap at this stage. From a sustainability perspective this has to be greener that any battery or PHEV vehicle with a 10 year life span?

Not sure yet Steve, it will be rebuilt as if it came out the factory but with a Turner head on it and the only item i would put on it if i can get hold of one would be a VNT turbo Wink 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.
