Unfortunately, there is a recall about early engines knocking on startup due to something about oil cooling jet springs not working until it warms up? Do a search for the recalls on this forum and see if it fits with your noise.

Could be the cooling jets. But also a faulty injector. If it is out of warranty give it a try-test with a thinner oil or if you can keep the car in a warmer spot overnight. On the other hand, nothing can be said-diagnostic on any cold engine.
I remember you wanted to clean the fuel circuit. Any chance dist went into the injection system? Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

Title: 2.4 Puma Engine Knock Noise.
Type: LD - Defender - All Years - Special Service Messages - Engine Name / Part No: SSM38792 Info Type: Service Bulletins Version No: 1 Date Uploaded: 21 Jul 2008 Models: LD - Defender Title: 2.4 Puma Engine Knock Noise. Last Modified: 21-JUL-2008 09:44 Category: Engine Symptom: 497000 Engine Noise Content Issue: Heavy audible knocking heard on start up. Cause: On start up oil pressures can cause the piston cooling jets, (PCJ), to latch into a zero flow condition. Due to hysteresis effect in design the jets do not unlatch until the engine is warm and the oil pressures lower again. During this time with no pressurized oil jet flow to the lower pistons / cylinder bores, overheat and scuff conditions / damage can occur. Action: Replace the engine assy but ensure only engines post serial # ELD00080707063602 are used. This condition will not occur on vehicles post assured Vin# 9A767162. Engines post the info above are fitted with modified PCJ internal springs and this issue is now closed. Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

i know it is 3 years but I imported it from Germany - and the servicebook is non existing......
But one question - if it was this condition would I then not be able to hear the knocking at idle when cold - there is none. 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold Puma 130 - 08- sold 90 200tdi 1991 - sold 88 Ser. 3 1977 200 TDI 110 CC 2003 |

ummmm. IMHO
1) try to get the book via dealer. If you did not do any of the services with a LR approved shop, then.....no way. 2) how about a clogged (FU) injector. The noise is from 1 or more cylinder? Try to scan the engine. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

Was there not an ECU update to help with this problem? If you could contact Land Rover customer services they could tell you what recalls or updates are applicable to your model and whether they have been carried out on your vehicle or not.Regards being out of warranty I would guess that anything like updates or recalls would still be covered as that is a problem at there end.If the knocking is not as stated in the bulletin I am almost sure they had an ECU upload for this. If I am wrong it will not be long before someone here corrects me! Anyway contact customer services for a record of what's been done to your vehicle. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Thanks a lot for all the replies. As it is now, I have talked to Rover Denmark - they say all recalls will be fixed regardless of servicebook +3 years etc. My car has one recall for the brakeshoe..and one for the ECU ( something about the engine " jumping" when cold.
I also went by a Ford dealer - the chief mechanic said that it was something in the engine management system that needed to be reset. It would take a couple of hours - because the " something" had to be reset and then the engine needed to selfadjust again. Then they also recommended an injectorcleaning - what they do is they disconnect fuel in and out, connect 1 litre of something ( i dont know what) under pressure to in and out and let the engine run on that. He said that you could almost always hear the change when it was half used. We do not have a lot of defender Pumas in Denmark, so I guess I will rely on Ford - they said right away what needed to be done - had done it many times before. Will post when I know more.
