The thing with mine started about 10 days ago - and has steadily growing worse. That indicates - I hope - that it is not the bad thing mentioned 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold

I did only drain the filter - but I added Bell Add 1D+ to clean the injectors etc. on advice from Ford - could it be that which have loosened something? I am going to try one more Bell Add tomorrow - the Ford mechanic did not have time until wednesday to take it in - so I think it is worth a try. When did you last fill up with diesel? I have this if I fill up from my local *otal (asterisk to protect me from the guilty) station. Bag of nails from 2000rpm upwards, from cold, but the noise goes away some time after the engine reaches temperature, or if the outside temp is high enough. All to do with modern diesel fuel additives allowing small amounts of water to be disolved/mixed with the diesel. This apparently caused the knocking. Hope it is only this for you........... Jon |

I fill up one to two times a week - but thinking back it actually started after I started using the car frequently - the first tank of diesel was from Shell - all after that is low cost gas station ( in Denmark they are called JET and OK) - I have just run a bottle of Bell add 1D+ through along with 25 litres of diesel - believe I can hear an improvement. Just filled up again - low cost diesel - and added Bell add diesel additive. Now only awaits the cold start tomorrow.......crossed fingers. I will surely try Shell next time.

I still have a little suspision about the noise emitting from one of the valve - lifters ( if they are called that). The oil I have been using is Havoline 5w30. I just found out that it fulfills Ford spec WSS-M2C-913B - and the spec demanded for the Puma is WSS-M2C-913C. - do not know the difference... but tomorrow I will give the engine a Bell Add servicetreatment - adding Bell Add to the oil - let it run at idle for 30 min - then change oil and filter. I have bought Castrol Edge 5w30 - damn pricey compared to the Havoline - but whatever is good for the engine.....

I have just given the engine a Bell Add servicecleaning and fresh Magnatec 5w30. That did not help at all.... Now the clattering is there cold or hot engine - allthough not so noisy when warm. The clattering is there a bit on of - it is also there when i use the engine as brake. I have tried to record the noise - just a very short clip - the clattering is barely audible, but it is there.. to me sounding like need of valveadjustment
Tell me if I am wrong - but I still think it is coming from one of the valves. I cannot stand the thought about it being related to the mentioned servicebulletin... Regards CRJ 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold Puma 130 - 08- sold 90 200tdi 1991 - sold 88 Ser. 3 1977 200 TDI 110 CC 2003 |

Not much difference between the two oils. Any chance of a faulty injector? Puma 110" SW

I cross my fingers it is only that - going to Ford mechanic wednesday. There is no smoke and the knocking is not that loud, so I guess it would be ok to drive the car until wednesday? 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold

One more question.....I now its a long shot but do any of you think that the noise could have anything to do with the plug in the midlle on the ecu. There is 3 plugs - with a white plastic clasp - the one in the midlle was not attached properly and I tried to do so, but the clasp cannot be closed correct because of the wiring in the plug. After fumbling a bit, I went for ride to the grocery, and noticed a change in the noise....... do not know if the plug has anything to do with the injectors.

Any chance you can get a nanocom or similar?
Not sure if it works, but disconnect the battery for some hours and then do the "cycle cleaning". Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

cycle cleaning - what is that? something I can do without a nanocom? have thought about ordering the remote tuning from alive - then I can read faultcodes - just have to get the finances right...

I think the ECU resets after 3-5 cycles. IIRC. Clean all plugs also (rail, ECU, MAF, etc). Puma 110" SW

Update. Went to the main Land Rover dealer today - they checked everything, and is almost certain it is not a injector. The mechanic was almoist certain that it had to do with the valves - the rocker ( is it called that in eng?) he suspected something broken and one of the valves staying closed. They needed to have the car overnight in order to hear it cold start before they went to take the top apart. They seemed to know their way around the engine - they do peugeot as well - same engine 2.2l. Just sorry that I have ordered a patriot rack and special hood from exmoor.... - seems the money could find use elsewhere Regards CRJ 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold Puma 130 - 08- sold 90 200tdi 1991 - sold 88 Ser. 3 1977 200 TDI 110 CC 2003 |
