Greeni, in reality, how practical is a centre mounted winch like that?

I can see the benefit, one winch so half the cost, no reduction on approach angle, better weight placement, etc, but how time consuming is it to swap from being front rigged to rear, especially when bogged waist deep in brown stuff? 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

@legin, yes that was a td5, has a funky Ecu on it and It pulled very well.

For those that think an Ibex is no substitute for a "real" Defender:

Yesterday I had a great day out in my Ibex, greenlaning in the Lake District. Nothing too difficult, just a steady drive taking in the scenery, snow on the hill tops, perfect. Knocked off around 5.00 as it was getting dark, to head home on the A590, back to the motorway. It started to rain again.
Friends called over the CB, "are you ok, your lights have gone out?". I flicked the on/off switch a couple of times and they came back on. This happened three or four times in the next ten minutes until they went off and wouldn't come back on.
So we spent the next 20mins bypassing the switch with some link wires and insulating tape.
At the side of a busy A road, in the dark, wet and cold.

The moral of this story is, an Ibex may have doors that shut properly, more space inside, a galvanised chassis and better paintwork than a Defender. However, it does still have enough Landrover parts to keep your life 'interesting' and stop you getting bored. Thumbs Up

Are you sure it competed in the OBC ? I can't think that a MK1 ever competed, do you know what year ?

Anyway, also at Tong, Ibex displaying the disadvantage of a short wheel base...

I used mine as a daily driver for 5 years plus driving to and from events /playdays
So I’d say it’s only as good as the donor parts you use ie newer parts less problems Thumbs Up

My error. It was the two Redpath Ibex's that competed in the 2003 event.

Worth finding the DVD if you can as Devon 4x4 was there as well.

I know, I was there...

To clarify, Neil (Redpath) competed in 2003, 2005 and 2008 in his Ibex, the vehicle being built and prepared by Maddison 4x4, Patrick Smart (owner of Maddison 4x4) co drove for him in 2003, 2005. Another Ibex (yellow SWB hard top, the name of the driver escapes me atm) also competed in 2003 in the tourist class. That was the same year Simon Buck entered in the D44 Range Rover.

In 2005 Andy Hogg and James Feeney also competed in a king cab 250S that was a sister vehicle to Neil's albeit without the uprated axles.

I queried it because those were the only ones I was aware of to have competed and I thought maybe I'd missed one somewhere !

I competed in 2005 and 2008 in my Defender, completing the event both times, beating Neil in 2008 Smile

Tony "slippers" Baskill, he was a real gentleman of the challenge scene, sadly he died not long ago.

In earlier years his motor looked more or less like a G Wagen, in later years... less so Smile

He had an ingenious winch setup on the front long before gigglepin et al appeared on the scene, an electric 8274 with hydraulic assist (might have been the other way around). Essentially when one started struggling the other would kick in to help. All home made, you can see it in the 2003 pic. I believe his co-driver, Dave Needham, designed and built it, could be wrong though. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Remember reading about this truck in Total Off Road magazine. Looked a proper bit of kit then, Amazing to see how far it evolved Shocked 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone
