Click image to enlarge Like the g wagon indicators. US Patent 6425596 B1 dated 30th July 2002 - Vehicle Winch Arrangement - shows how clever the system is: https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/u...gement.pdf and someone was asking about an expedition version? Click image to enlarge although on second thoughts, I'm not sure if it is an Ibex... and a tie in with Ricardo for defense sales? |

I don't think the Ricardo link is still there, it was that link, IMV, that set the marque back by several years, killing off the, until then, active owner's club, the annual(ish) Ibex Fest etc... My understanding of it at the time (which, I stress, is only my understanding as an enthusiast at the time trying to figure out what was happening) was that John Foers was looking for a way to retire. There were a number of people interested in taking on the build of the Ibex to move it to the next level, some of them existing enthusiasts who had already built a good number of the vehicles up and helped in the R&D and there were a number of good ideas around, especially those around the dashboard replacement.
John chose Ricardo and David (his son) started work for Ricardo as part of the deal. Ricardo had little interest in marketing the vehicle from what we could see and the build quality was pretty poor from the vehicles we saw coming out of the "factory". Sales didn't take off and the, then, owner's club floundered as people became more and more alienated by a company that had no interest in the marque. They wouldn't even provide details of chassis numbers and sizes to the archive that, up until then, had maintained a picture and description of pretty much every Ibex to have been produced from the very first. Like Land Rover, I think that once you lose sight of and lose interest in your own history you lose the soul of the vehicle. Eventually the relationship was terminated and manufacture brought back in house but it had missed the boat, rather than concentrating on the market they had they tried to move to a different market and failed. The Ibex is a vehicle that always seems to have great potential but then never quite lives up to it. A catalogue of missed opportunities IMV but I still have a bit of a soft spot for them and still consider building one from time to time. Maybe one day.... http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

The Outback Challenge, as previously discussed. That was the irony really, you call them the "works Ibex" but both were specced and built by Patrick at Maddison 4x4 and had no connection to Foers beyond them supplying the base 250s kit, much of which was produced to Patrick and Steve Maddison's design. There were actually three Ibex built to a similar design, all with the GM diesel V8 engine, auto box, all 250s King Cab, all painted bright yellow and green and all registered as new vehicles with 51 and 52 plate registrations. The original owners being Steve Barras, Neil Redpath and Patrick Smart (later sold to Andy Hogg). All three built by Patrick. Neil and Andy's Ibex were the ones that competed in Australia. Neil's Ibex was the one that evolved the most, Patrick having worked with Dynatrac to produce a version of their axles that would fit Land Rover suspension mounts. So Neil's truck got those fitted as the prototype for that conversion. Neil's truck later was converted again to use coil over suspension and hydraulic bump stops prior to the 2005 OBC. Prior to the 2008 OBC a supercharger was added to his truck. Patrick had a dedicated build area for the Ibex and had fabrication in place to produce them from scratch and it was shortly after that John chose to license the manufacture to Ricardo. The first "Team Ibex" outing - Muddy Trucker's Trophy, 2002 with Neil and Steve's trucks... Click image to enlarge Patrick's (later Andy Hogg's) 250s made it's first public appearance at the 2003 Ibex Fest... Click image to enlarge It was Neil's and Andy's that competed in the OBC, Neil in 2003, 2005 and 2008, Andy in 2005. All 3 competed as a team in one of the Three Peaks Challenges but i can't find any pics from that unfortunately. None of them used the Vector winch system as it was not (at the time) synthetic rope compatible or rated for a winch bigger than a Warn 8000. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

Incidentally, Patrick's was the last Ibex to be added to the Ibex Register chassis number 7F073, it was after that was built that the Ricardo decision came about and the Ibex Owner's Club and the Ibex Register collapsed.
I still have a copy of the Ibex Register up to that point so here's a few of the pics from the Ibex Register... 4F001, the first Mk1 Ibex... 4F012, Wallie's camper conversion (I think it was his anyway !) 4F017, The Cosibex... that was one weird and quick Ibex !!! 4F025, had a chequered history, started off as this... Got T boned on the A1 in a high speed crash and was rebuilt with a new rear chassis to become... 5F031 the first MK2 5F045... quite long this one 5F048 CSW anyone ? 5F052, the first FireBex had to undergo a series of tests and was eventually certified for aviation use 6F042, Mk3 prototype which, as far as I know was the only Mk3 made 7F056, the first Mk4 Click image to enlarge 7F073, The last entry in the Ibex register Click image to enlarge http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

Yes, still competing, mostly club trials once a month or so and the occasional challenge event that takes my fancy. Neil has been taking the Ibex down to some european events in the last couple of years and I may well end up doing the same.
There are always rumours that the Muddy Trucker's Trophy might reappear for one final time and if it does I'll be signing up for that. The Outback Challenge is now bi-annual and is much smaller than it was with no special terms for international competitors but if I'm honest I can't see me doing that again but if someone were to come to me tomorrow and say they'd got room in a container... who knows http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |
