New Defender will be available in three wheelbases, including a pick-up.

Components have been tested on the road, typically on a RRS platform.

I'm reserving judgement on the look of it...

"Again, care to explain how you can be so sure?"

LRA, let's examine the current situation and what is publicly known about a future Defender:
There is very little information, almost none, that's been published by JLR.
What has been released is very vague and contains no technical details or styling clues.

The reason for this is JLR don't want anyone to know. After the adverse reaction to the DC100, I'm not surprised they are keeping a very tight lid on things.
Hundreds of designers and engineers will be working on it, if they are going to make any new vehicle, so how do they manage to keep things secret?
By telling those people if they are found to be the source of "commercially sensitive leaks", they will have to find a new job.
So those that do know are keeping very quiet about it.
Certainly no one would say on an open forum "I work in suspension testing and we had a..... last week".

Every now and again we might get someone pass off a little info, quietly, without making a big statement.
They don't want to loose their job, or a close relative or friend's job.
So the rest of us have to accept those snippets, figure out which ones are real/credible, and wait for the official company line.
Wink

I understand all of that but given that a lot of posts in this and other similar threads are along the lines of "it's all pointless speculation" then really, what is the point without at least some hint of authenticity?

I've no doubt that some on here know some real details and they've been told by their employer (either JLR or somebody associated) to keep stum. Some of the unsubstantiated statements though, sound to me as if they've got a secret and just can't wait to show off a bit by letting everybody know. Darren

I've just read in business news that Jaguar Land Rover are teaming up with Damon Albarn's virtual reality rock band "Gorrillaz" to recruit staff. Could these be for a virtual reality quality control department for the new Defender? Very Happy

David, you've broken the longest silence on this topic for ages. Shocked
6 weeks with no speculation, no rumours and still no official news.

This is correct. The new Defender will be made in Nitra and will have the small windows in the back and in the roof again. Cool

Agreed. Do we think this transition has been badly managed by JLR or are there some big-black-spectacled marketing gurus amongst us who think it's been excellently managed. The silence is more like a nail in the coffin (akin to the original shut-down of the Mini or Beetle) than a transition before re-launch. Makes me wonder if it's deliberate to kill off the bearded weirdos who make up the current Defender fan before re-launching to an entirely new, young urban adventurer market? Bar name, I can't see them wanting any transfer of the history between the two. It'll be like the newer Wranglers, aimed at someone who works in some cool 21c office job in the week, before throwing their 10k carbon MTB on the back, ropes and harnesses in the boot, paddle board on the roof, and heading to the hills wearing Arc'teryx and Salomon trainers for a weekend of outdoor action. Just like the ads. Sounds like my life, I should be given one to trial. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

Agree with that 100%
They don't want a link with the old model.

Nitra. So it will be a Slovakia assembled truck. Shocked
Probably a big quality improvement versus if it would be assembled again in Solihull. Whistle
But let's hope it won't look like a (Dodge) Nitro. Rolling with laughter
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Coming to think of it. The new JLR Slovakia plant is confirmed and apparently should supply its first model by end of 2018. A new Discovery apparently.
Olaf may have hit the nail on the head there with saying that the new Defender will also be produced in Nitra. That might even be the reason why there are no real sightings of early Defender test mules reported on U.K. roads. They may be running on the Slovakia roads, which probably is a more discreet place than the U.K. for that purpose.
Eric

Google maps confirms the above. The plant is quite visible already and the JLR name gets mentioned if you zoom enough

As this thread is getting far too serious and is full of speculation and seems to be taking on to much fake news I thought I would post this factual news photo. Laughing

The worlds critically acclaimed Chief Design Officer for Land Rover; Gerry McGovern, on dress up Friday is seen test driving one of his early New Defender concept vehicles.

You have seen it here first Rolling with laughter

It's nice to know that the new 2018 Defender drivers will be waiving at each other as well. I don't think so. Mr. Green Defender 90XS SW
