It states that new diesels and petrols will be extinct, so i take from that that the vehicles already produced will be fine, you just may not be able to enter certain parts of the country in a fossil fueled vehicle. Similar to the LEZ.

King William will be sending me a birthday card.

The real problem leading upto it will be demonisation of the internal combustion engine by councils ( which is already happening) under the pretence of saving the world. Meanwhile really serious pollution continues in the guise of cruise ships & wood burners in Urban areas to name but two.

As i have long maintained, provide me a viable alternative to the big jeep for towing and I'm in. But it needs to be a proper working alternative. Same with the Jimny for land work. That said what is proposed for actually generating the electricity, doesn't that need cleaning up too? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

It will be interesting to see how the changes to the economy are managed, if the infernal combustion engine is forced into retirement. Where will all the tax recvenue from fuel duty and RFL come from?

Presumably massive increaes in the tax paid on electric vehicles and electricity.

Fortunately I am unlikely to be interested when he time comes since I will probably be starting the slow transition from human being to fossil fuel.

It's a bit ironic that in the same week that they decide not to electrify the east midlands main line but to continue using diesels that they decide to stop manufacturing diesel cars.

A couple of years ago I had a test drive in a BMW i3, their salesman rang me last week to say that the next generation i3 was now available with double the range, it was now up to 120 miles. I think there needs to be a lot more development of battery technology before I take to the streets in an electric car.

The good news is that they haven't banned diesel cars from 2040, just that they have targeted to stop manufacture. Defender 90XS SW

^ Tesla have the tech on the batteries, and the car range is coming down with more 'affordable models'

300 mile range good enough for most folk. Also even 120 mile range in a small town car would be fine? short trips etc.

Basically between now and 2040 some how I need a petrol v8 in something just to tick that off.

Already I'm spotting many many cars with badges 'Hybrid' on the boot or wing so it's happening, 2040 is a long way off, I guess the taxes will be pushed up and up and derv and petrol to force your hand..

Funny enough I showed my wife an i3 and said how about one of them the other day to replace hers...she thought it looked fugly.. the rear side window and a bit thin and tall...

having work Iron bridge power station conversion from coal to bio mass = drop power out put drop from 2x 896Mw to 478Mw x 2 base load Exclamation

as all banking and money lording system in the London has to run A/C 24 7 backup by diesel gen , harrods up to 2010 run diesel gen 24 7 and large part London runs diesel gen 24 7 as power system can not cope if these unit power down London power grid go into meltdown Exclamation

As I sit out here in Berri Oil Field in the Arabian Gulf , knowing what I know about world oil production and the influential powers that be who really dominate the worlds economies do you really think that these stories they put out to try and appease the hippy green brigade will ever come to light ?

I dont see the real need for debating or pondering over this anymore .These electric cars and other greener modes of transport are nothing more than a token gesture by governments and car companies to play to the masses and place themselves in a better environmental light . Fossil fuels are still King and will continue to be so as long as there is money to be made .

As Discomog mentions, the range of cars is improving all the time - I am happy that by 2040 the average electric car will be perfectly capable, and charging will be quick. They will be fast & quiet, and healthier - what's not to like? Infrastructure improvements will be driven by demand, as always.

And I don't think this announcement will have any effect on the type of vehicle available, there will still be trucks, tractors etc. in a similar form to what they would have been with ICE.

I think it' safe to assume that only the early adopters of electric vehicles will enjoy the big savings (just like the diminishing solar panel incentives) - in time the government will still need to raise the equivalent revenue from all the new electric road users. In the meantime I suspect they will extract it from constantly increasing the sales tax on new ICE cars.

But I'm wondering where that leaves legacy ICE vehicles in the very long term, i.e. classics - not so much from a tax POV, but infrastructure.
I'm thinking in many cases such as the prosaic, often-driven classic (such as Moggies, Beetles, Land Rovers?? etc), electric conversion will be favoured as fossil fuel will be increasingly expensive and inconvenient.
Those running exotics and classic racing cars will maybe keep their classic engines and stump-up for the cost of using them.
