Would'nt it make more sense to further develop bio-diesel?
www.greenfuels.co.uk state that their bio diesel emits 85% less CO2 than fossil.

I think the whole thing is silly.

But ignoring that, think of the cost and jobs impact - even if its petrol stations going and all the fuel related industry elements...its interesting to see how we will employ people in the future Mike

Of course they say that. All companies who produce bio-diesel would say that. But in effect, bio-diesel is pretty horrible stuff for a diesel car engine. How do I know? Rolling Eyes Whistle
And don't forget, Puma engines (surely the 2.4) are certified for not higher blend than B5. So further developing bio-diesel to B10 and higher is probably not so good an idea.
We are spoiled here in Switzerland, all diesel at Swiss pumps remains B0. I think we are the only country in Europe that has never approved bio-diesel for standard road use. (Except for certain public transport trucks, etc. which are designed to run on B100). Hope the smart Swiss will never change and keep banning it, much better for the engine. Thumbs Up

big is problem is modem engine is fuel system
as then diesel first had the idea for he new engine he run it on nut oil Exclamation
but saying that had job at ComAp system work with bi gen using new scania engine running on bi diesel for tesco

Lack of infrastructure for re-fuelling is a bit of a red herring. The infrastructure will be diversified to your own front door as pretty much everyone has electricity and why would you want to plug in to a lamp post when you can plug in at home or work?

There will of course be a massive shift in jobs from the oil sector to electricians and electrical infrastructure.

If everyone tried to recharge electric cars now, the national grid would probably burn to the ground!

Most houses have an 80A feeder, but the system is only built for around 20-30% demand from each household for any length of time, with brief peaks above that.

Assuming 2 cars and fast chargers, that's another 40A of load per household at least, for several hours a night.

Will the military have to have electric powered vehicles? How many batteries would it take to power a moderate sized tank?

To make it effective for that battery power would have to be as energy dense and light as Diesel/AvGas. When this happens lots will change.

In that was ever achieved it would make a great power source for a tank. It not idling means it would be silent, it would be quieter when running and power for the systems on board is from the main battery bank. Given the modular nature of the power packs for tanks in theory a drop in replacement could be engineered so you could run it on either carbon based fuel or electric as a mid life upgrade.

Of course this is a long way off.

Just read that British gas are increasing their electricity charges by 12.5% so in the next few days all suppliers will follow suit ….. increases like that will certainly encourage folks to go electric. Just wait until the most expensive project of any type ever undertaken my mankind, the new Hinckley Point Power Station, comes on line (if it ever does come on line, that is). It will apparently be generating the most expensive electricity ever generated anywhere in the world, costing more even that offshore wind farms (curently the most expensive source of electricity). I bet that causes a massive hike in bills for customers, and profits for some foreign Johnnies!

All of these supposedly green and "planet saving" measures fail to address the basic problem, namely the fact that there are far too many humans on the planet.

I also wonder how all the countries which rely almost totally on fossil fuel revenues will take the change in fortunes if and when the world ceases to run on oil. Will we see these countries destoying wind farms and nuclear power plants to redress the balance, I wonder. Maybe "accidentally" letting a supertanker drift through an offshore wind farm?

(Following the mention of Rudolf Diesel a few posts above, let us also not forget that it was actually two British engineers, namely Herbert Ackroyd Stuart and Charles Richard Binney, who really invented the first viable compression ignition engine. Strictly speaking the things in our Defenders should be known as Stuart-Binney engines, not Diesel engines).
