Following the mention of Rudolf Diesel a few posts above, let us also not forget that it was actually two British engineers, namely Herbert Ackroyd Stuart and Charles Richard Binney, who really invented the first viable compression ignition engine. Strictly speaking the things in our Defenders should be known as Stuart-Binney engines, not Diesel engines).

An invention, methinks. You can only discover something which exists, so you can discover the fact that diesel fuel (sorry Stuart-Binney fuel) ignites when injected into hot compressed air, but the mechanism to do this injection and turn it into something useful is definitely an invention.

Below appeared in one of our local Swiss newspapers today. Finally a man of my heart is speaking up. Whistle

The diesel engine essential to the climate?
Faced with the scandal of the dieselgate, the president of auto-Swiss warns against an exaggerated political intervention.
François Launaz considers the diesel engine as indispensable for the protection of the climate.
The president of the umbrella association of automotive importers, in an interview with magazine Blick published Tuesday, should avoid making the situation worse with prohibition measures. In the Swiss cities the nitrogen oxide pollution rate is much lower than in Germany, he says.
To technical problems, it is necessary to favor technical solutions and not to mix politics, underlines François Launaz. The situation in Germany is fueled by the legislative elections which give rise to populist demands, disconnected from reality, argues he. Switzerland must continue its journey in a pragmatic and fruitful way.
The technical solutions announced by the foreign manufacturers will also be implemented in Switzerland, details the president of auto-Swiss. At the same time, many importers are examining the possibility of offering commercial assistance to support the transition from old to new diesel models. The branch must also intensify its information work, recognizes François Launaz.
The 60-year-old does not believe in a ban on diesel, which he considers essential to reach the 2020 CO2 targets set by the Paris Climate Accord.
