who does and who doesn't use 1st gear?
when just driving round with out a trailer on typical A and B roads do you use 1st when pulling away from standstill ie onto an island / away from traffic lights. 1st gear is sometimes referred to as a towing gear which makes me think not?

I use 2nd for flat and downhill pull a ways, I find 1st too low most of the time especially if i need to get out quick like at the bottom of our lane. 1st all the time with a trailer.

1st only with trailer or on hill start for me its too low and not needed.

2nd for daily use, flat or slightly inclined, i find it much smoother. DEFENDER XS CSW 08 TONGA GREEN

I tried this to overcome the appauling 1st to 2nd shift, but found I needed to slightly slip the clutch (not my prefered practice). What about the rest of you, any comments?

I use first unless i'm setting off down a steep hill. I got sick of riding the clutch in second when setting off. 130 crew cab

Use 1st all the time due to the added weight of gears and kit on the 130. Stephan

I tend to use first most of the time.

If I need to get away fast (across a busy roundabout) then I use 2nd.

First is great for catching out people that drive the Puma for the first time Rolling with laughter

I use mostly 1st but like others have said to get onto a busy and fast roundabout it has to be 2nd.
